This Jazz Standard is included in the Jazz Play Along Vol. 14 – Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock’s mid-1970’s period resulted in a trio of studio masterpieces, Headhunters, Thrust, and Man-Child. Thrust was released in 1974 as a follow-up to the much-admired Headhunters, with Mike Clark on drums instead of Harvey Mason but otherwise the same band. The album is in the same vein as Headhunters and, like Headhunters, consists of four long-ish songs. All four of these tunes stuck around in Herbie’s repertoire, but “Butterfly” has probably gotten the most cover treatment.

‘Butterfly,’ composed by Herbie Hancock and Bennie Maupin for Herbie’s 1974 album Thrust, is perhaps what we would call ‘smooth jazz’ today (or at least an early influence on smooth jazz). It was called ‘jazz fusion’ back then, or perhaps Hancock himself thought it was some kind of instrumental R&B.

This was the kind of music that many jazz musicians of the early 1970s considered ‘too commercial’ and accused Hancock of ‘selling out’. But listening to it now, I’m struck by how creative and non-commercial it really was. Yes, it used a straight eighth beat similar to pop music and an electric piano. But listen to the melody orchestrated with woodwind! And the Gil Evans-esque voicings that Hancock used! Very creative music from an inspiring time in Herbie Hancock’s career.

Like much of the jazz fusion of the 1970s and smooth jazz since then, ‘Thrust’ uses relatively few chords and can be approached modally. If you look at the end of the lead sheet, it says to use an Fm7 chord for your entire solo. You can improvise with a scale, as in F Dorian mode, or you can go ‘out there’ and layer other scales on top of the underlying F minor harmony. Experiment with it and see what you get out of it.
