Herbie Hancock (full biography on Wikipedia)

Herbie Hancock, remains in the same place as ever: at the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. In addition to being recognized as a legendary pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock has been a fundamental part of every popular music movement since the 1960s.

As a member of the Miles Davis quintet that introduced an innovative sound to jazz, he also devised new approaches for his own recordings, followed by his work in the 1970s with record-breaking albums such as “Headhunters,” which combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music.

“Rockit” and “Future Shock” marked Hancock’s foray into the sounds of electronic dance music; during that same period, he continued to work on an acoustic arrangement with VSOP, which included former Miles Davis bandmates Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.

Hancock has won an Oscar for his soundtrack to “Around Midnight,” as well as 14 Grammy Awards, including “Album of the Year” for “River: The Joni Letters,” and two Grammy Awards in 2011 for “The Imagine Project”, a CD product of his global collaboration with artists from all over the world. Many of his compositions, such as “Canteloupe Island”, “Maiden Voyage”, “Watermelon Man” and “Chameleon”, have become modern classics.

Herbert Jeffrey Hancock was born on April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois. He started studying piano when he was 7 years old; a few years later, as a preteen, he was already playing Mozart with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.   He began to enjoy jazz compositions during his high school years, and upon entering Grinnell College in 1956, he decided to concentrate on electrical engineering. His career initially seemed more hands-on and allowed her to invest in his passion for technology. However,

Hancock decided to switch to songwriting and formed his own group, which later moved to New York to play with trumpeter Donald Byrd.

Herbie Hancock landed a recording contract with Blue Note and released his debut album as head of a band, Takin’ Off , which gained fame as the first Blue Note album to feature all-new tunes, such as the all-important “Watermelon Man“. While continuing to record and write future classics like “Cantaloupe Island ” and “Maiden Voyage “, Hancock jammed with Miles Davis.

Beginning in 1963 and for several years, he would be part of the leading group of bands, with both influencing each other’s sound and Davis introducing Hancock on electric piano. Over the next several years, through the release of dozens of albums, Hancock earned a reputation as a leading songwriter free to explore genres outside traditional jazz, from fusion to R&B to hip-hop.

Sonically radical, mystical, and revered, Mwandishi (1970) was followed a little later by the funk-based, platinum-certified Head Hunters (1973); the album included ” Chameleon ” and another version of “Watermelon Man “, whose sultry beats would later be remixed in hip-hop/reggae circles. He continued to play in various guises, including stints with the VSOP Quintet which brought together members of Davis’s band.

1983’s Future Shock featured the award-winning single ” Rockit “. The following decades saw more releases on different labels, including Dis Is Da Drum (1994), Gershwin’s World ‘s 100th birthday (1998), in honor of George Gershwin, and Future 2 Future (2001) in a more electronic style.
