Frank Sinatra (1915-1998)

(Francis Albert Sinatra; Hoboken, United States, 1915 – Los Angeles, 1998) American light music singer and actor. Sinatra’s musical vocation was born in 1933, after attending a concert by the singer Bing Crosby. Two years later, he joined the group called The Hoboken Four and appeared on the radio program Major Bowes Amateur Hours, which led to appearances on various radio shows.
In 1939, trumpeter Harry James hired him as a singer in his orchestra, with which he made his first recordings. That same year, he married Nancy Barbato. In 1940, two fundamental events occurred in his personal and artistic career: he joined Tommy Dorsey’s orchestra, one of the most popular swing groups in the United States at that time, and his daughter Nancy was born.

Due to his outstanding personality, in 1942 he became an idol of American youth; In 1943 he began his solo career with the publication of the album All or nothing at all, which managed to sell a million copies. With his popularity on the rise, in 1944 he made his film debut with the film Higher and Higher. That same year, his son Francis Wayne would be born, and four years later, his second daughter, Tina. In the early 1950s, a serious condition in his vocal cords led to fears that the singer would have to abandon his musical career prematurely; However, he recovered without major problems.

In 1951, he divorced Nancy to marry popular actress Ava Gardner. Two years later, he won a Hollywood Oscar for best supporting actor for his performance as Angelo Maggio in the film From Here to Eternity.
That same year, he separated from Ava Gardner. In 1955, he resumed his musical career with the album In the Wee Small Hours, which reached second place on the American charts, while in the cinematographic section he was nominated for the Oscar for best actor for his performance in the film El man with the golden arm (The man with the golden arm).
The album Songs for swingin’ lovers appeared in 1956, and also reached number two on the country’s charts, where it remained for 66 weeks. The following year, in 1957, he finally obtained a divorce from Ava Gardner, and a year later he published the LP Come Fly to Me, the first to reach first place on the charts, in which it remained for 71 weeks, figures which he would surpass with Only the lonely and its 120 weeks of permanence.

In the 1960s, he continued his brilliant recording career with titles such as Nice and easy (1961) and Strangers in the night (1962). He also starred in the film The Manchurian Candidate, 1962, which, despite being considered by American critics to be one of Sinatra’s best films, did not obtain great recognition from the public.
When he was fifty years old he married the actress Mia Farrow, thirty years younger than him, although the marriage soon foundered. In 1968, he would divorce again, to contract his fourth marriage in 1976, this time with Barbara Marx, the widow of the comic actor Zeppo Marx, youngest of the Marx brothers. In the musical section, he lavished collaborations such as Sinatra-Basie (1962), with his youth idol Bing Crosby in 1964, with his own daughter Nancy and with the Brazilian composer António Carlos Jobim in 1967 or with Duke Ellington in 1968.
In the 1970s he established himself as an authentic popular music institution, and in 1980 he played his last dramatic role in the film The First Deadly Sin, although he could still be seen in a cameo such as that of the comedy Cannonball 2, from 1984.
In 1990, on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday, he celebrated a successful tour of his country and in 1994 he was awarded the Grammy Award for his entire artistic career.
