Single ‘MY GENERATION’ (The Who)
On October 29, 1965, the single album “My generation” by the British group The Who was released in the United Kingdom (it appeared in the USA on November 5).

The young art student Pete Townshend, who has just moved to the aristocratic London neighborhood of Belgravia, arouses a certain rejection among his neighbors. The fact that this young man is on the way to becoming one of the Greats in the history of Rock with his band does not seem to console them, and they openly criticize his bad taste in dress and his unkempt and dirty appearance, fearing that his presence and that of others like him could damage the good name of the neighborhood. Pete, oblivious to all criticism, does not give up on his extravagances, among which the car he usually used to get around stood out: A 1935 Packard funeral model…
A lady of high rank, none other than the Queen Mother, spends many days in her official car on her way to Buckingham Palace and suffers, as she passes through the street of Townshend’s home, the Dantesque sight of the old car. Tired of seeing such scrap metal in such an elegant neighborhood, and believing it abandoned, she orders the Packard to be removed with the crane.
When Townshend receives the news, he explodes in anger and curses these “post-imperialist assholes”. And his anger distills a thirst for revenge, which he captures through his guitar and his pen in a song announcing and defining with violent determination the generation gap. It becomes an anthem for all those who want to die before they grow old. A rock classic, which perhaps would not exist if the Queen Mother had not passed through there.

When he turned thirty, he was asked what he thought about the song and its famous line, “I hope to die before I get old”. His response was, “When I wrote the song I couldn’t imagine how quickly one ages, and even more so in the rock and roll industry, with so many changing fashions…”
