Salvatore Adamo

Today is the 82nd birthday of the Italian-Belgian singer-songwriter born in Comiso (Sicily) Salvatore Adamo. The son of Italian emigrants in Belgium, he began his career in 1960.

His father, a miner, emigrated to Belgium in February 1947 and the family followed shortly after, settling in Jemappes. At the age of three, Salvatore spent a year in bed, a victim of meningitis. As his parents did not want to see him also working in the mine, they sent him to the Catholic school of La Salle, where he surprised everyone with his abilities in art and music. His early influences were reading the poetry of Victor Hugo and the music of French singer-songwriters such as Jacques Prévert and George Brassens, as well as Italian canzonette. He began to sing and compose his own songs at a very young age and made his debut in a contest promoted by Radio Luxembourg, whose final phase, held in February 1960 in Paris, he won with the theme ‘Si j’osais’.
His first success was ‘Sans toi, ma mie’ (1963) in Belgium. He immediately reached No. 1 in the Belgian hit parade. The debut album, ’63/64′ with songs such as ‘Tombe la neige’ y ‘Vous permettez, Monsieur’ transform him into a celebrity in Belgium and France, confirming his talent as an author, composer, and performer. By the early 1970s, Adamo was already a popular singer around the world, and translated versions of all his albums were even produced into Italian, Spanish, English, German, and Japanese.
Currently, after more than 450 songs composed and more than a hundred million albums sold, he continues to record and perform all over the world. In 2008 he released an album of duets with other greats of the chanson and after publishing ‘La Grande Roue’ (2012), ‘Adamo chante Bécaud’ (2014), ‘L’Amour n’a jamais tort’ (2016) and ‘Si vous saviez…’ (2018), his most recent installment was ‘In French Please!’ in January 2023.
