LP 1969: ‘THE ALLMAN BROTHERS’ (The Allman Brothers)
On November 4, 1969, the debut album of The Allman Brothes Band was released, a southern blues rock group formed around the brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, guitarist and keyboardist respectively. Duane had worked as a session musician with the greats at Muscle Shoals Studios in Alabama and had developed a band project with two lead guitars and two drummers. For this he had Berry Oakley (bass), Dickey Betts (2nd guitar), Jai Johanson and Butch Trucks (drums and percussion). For the production, the first chosen was Tom Dowd, known for his work with Cream and John Coltrane, but as he was not available (he would be for the next Allman album, “Idlewild South”) the engineer and producer of Atlantic, Adrian Barber, took over. The recording sessions took place over two weeks at Atlantic Studios in New York where they recorded several of the songs that emerged from the jams that the band used to perform in their shows, in which they incorporated elements of jazz and country, such as “Dreams” and “Whipping post” and versions of “Don”t want you no more” by Spencer Davis and “Trouble no more” by Muddy Waters.
The commercial response was nil and more than for its musical content it gave more to talk about because of the image inside the album in which the group was shown naked in a stream in a forest. In some publications you could read comments such as “another bad group of long-haired electric rockers from the South”, although Rolling Stone saved it from total burning: “A coherent album in which a group of white people manages to produce an authentic blues rock sound full of inspiration and energy”. Oblivious to this, the band did not stop triumphing on stage (in 1970 they performed 300 shows) gaining more and more followers in each concert that would help turn the Allman Brothers into one of the most popular rock bands of the first half of the seventies.
