LP 1971: ‘LED ZEPPELIN IV’ (Led Zeppelin)
On November 8, 1971, the fourth album by the British band Led Zeppelin was released. After the bitter criticism received for their previous work, Jimmy Page, wounded in his vanity, decided to release the album without credits and without a name, (as Prince would do 22 years later) replacing them with four symbols representative of each member of the group. All this against the wishes of the record label and its advisors who considered it artistic suicide to release the album without a title or the name of the band, also taking into account that they had not toured or released for a year, after placing two consecutive albums at number 1. Indeed, the album known as “Led Zeppelin IV” (or “Four Symbols”, “Untitled”, “The Hermit” or “Zoso”) was not No. 1, but it was No. 2 and Led Zeppelin”s most commercially successful album and with nearly 40 million copies, one of the best-selling in history. On this occasion the critics received the work with enthusiasm, even the most intransigent and caustic such as Robert Christgau gave up convinced with comments such as “A masterpiece of the genre”.
Recorded at Island Studios and the Rolling Stones” Mobile Studio under the direction and production of Jimmy Page, the album contained four of the Zeppelin”s most popular tracks: “Black Dog”, “Rock and Roll”, “Going to California” and of course their most iconic song, “Stairway to Heaven”, whose guitar solos and final climax were a major influence on later rock groups such as Aerosmith, Metallica and Guns N”Roses. Despite not being released as a single, it is one of the most played songs on American radio stations. Also in this case, Page was accused of plagiarism because the acoustic guitar introduction of “Stairway to Heaven” was too similar to the song “Taurus” recorded in 1968 by the group Spirit, with whom the Zeppelin coincided on an American tour. In May 2014, Mark Andes, former bassist of Spirit, filed a lawsuit on behalf of the late Randy California, composer of “Taurus” that was finally dismissed by the judge.
