Susan Tedeschi
Today is the 55th birthday of the singer and blues guitarist Susan Tedeschi, born in Boston (Massachusetts). Although she studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and toured concert halls for years where she earned a reputation as a blueswoman with a voice reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt, she didn’t really achieve success until 2000. That year, thanks to his album ‘Just Won’t Burn’, Tedeschi earned a nomination for best new artist of the year along with big pop names such as Britney Speas, Christina Aguilera, Kid Rock and Macy Gray. Aguilera won and Susan’s four opponents reached mega-stardom in a short time. Tedeschi, on the other hand, reluctant to the servitude of awards and fame, maintained a low-profile career, which she maintains – despite successive nominations – to this day.
Although born in Boston, Susan grew up in nearby Norwell, where the young woman kept listening to her father’s old vinyl with music by Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt. By the age of five, she was already singing in theatrical performances at school and in church. Educated as a Catholic, she found more inspiration in the choirs of African-American babtist churches, whose music she found ‘less repressed and closer to God’. At the age of 13 he was already part of a band and at 18 he formed his own group, Smokin’ Section, with which he performed playing original songs around Scituate (Massachusetts) until he entered the Berklee College of Music.
There he sang in a gospel group and graduated in music composition at the age of 20. At the same time, Susan entered the blues scene in Boston, participating in jams and in 1994 she formed her own group, Susan Tedeschi Band, with Tom Hambridge on drums and Adrienne Hayes on guitar. Her then-boyfriend, Tim Gearan taught Susan the secrets of the blues guitar and in October 1995 they recorded the album ‘Better Days’, which was a discreet local success.
Her following album, ‘Just Won’t Burn’ (1998), , marks his triumphant debut domestically, as the album peaks at No. 2 on the blues charts and sells 600,000 copies. Susan and her group appear as opening acts at concerts by artists such as John Mellencamp, B.B. King, Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. At the 2000 Grammy ceremony, Susan is nominated in the category of best new artist of the year.
It was precisely at one of the concerts with the Allman Brothers held in 1999 that she met her current husband, Derek Trucks, slide guitarist of the Allmans. In June 2001 she was already pregnant with her first child, Charles Kahlil Trucks, which delayed the release of her third album, “Wait For Me”, released in 2003 and nominated for a Grammy for best contemporary blues album.
Trucks already collaborated on it with the guitar. Her firm decision not to play the game of the industry that implied the nomination to the gramophone (videos, promotions, advertising sessions), has kept her, much to the chagrin of her record label, far from the great sales figures. However, the 250,000 copies sold of “Wait For Me” can be considered a great triumph in a genre in which many are content to sell 10,000 copies.
In 2004, she recorded and released “Live from Austin, TX”, a magnificent live concert in which Susan was accompanied by William Greene on Hammond organ, Jason Crosby on keyboards, violin and backing vocals, Ron Perry on bass and Jeff Sipe on drums. In 2005 his fifth album, “Hope and Desire” (also nominated for a Grammy) was released and in 2008 his last release to date was released, “Back to the River”, which was again nominated for a Grammy for “best contemporary blues album”.
Susan”s husband, Dereck Trucks, leads his own group, Dereck Trucks Band, with which Tedeschi has also collaborated on occasion. In 2010 they both temporarily disbanded their respective bands and formed the Tedeschi Trucks Band, with which the pair has played at festivals such as Eric Clapton”s Crossroad Guitar Festival or the Fuji Rock Festival. In 2011 they released their first album, “Revelator”, which was followed in 2012 by the live “Everybody”s Talkin”. On the other hand, they also perform as Soul Stew Revival with members of their two bands.
In August 2013 Tedeschi Trucks Band”s second album appeared: “Made Up Mind” and in January 2016 he released “Let Me Get By” for which he received a Blues Award in 2017. Susan also won it as Female Contemporary Blues Artist of the Year and her band as Best Blues Band the following year. In 2019 “Signs” was released and in 2021 the live show “Layla Revisited (Live at LOCKN”)”. In September 2022, the Tedeschi Trucks Band released an ambitious project consisting of four albums with 24 songs together and their respective videos under the title “I Am the Moon”.
