THE SONGS THAT SHAPED ROCK & ROLL: 1966
‘TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS’ (Otis Redding)
”Try a Little Tenderness’ was composed by Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connelly and Harry M. Woods in 1932 and was recorded for the first time that same year by the Ray Noble Orchestra with Val Rosing on lead vocals. There were subsequent editions such as those of Ted Lewis, Ruth Etting, and Bing Crosby, all of them in 1933.
In 1946, Frank Sinatra recorded the song for the album ‘The Voice of Frank Sinatra’. None of them helped define or shape rock and roll. However, a version recorded in 1966 by soul artist Otis Redding, accompanied by Booker T & the MG’s and Isaac Hayes as arranger, does deserve that honor. Redding’s performance with its slow, delicate start that leads to a frantic R&B conclusion is on numerous lists of ‘the greatest songs of all time’. It is included in the Grammy Hall of Fame and, of course, is one more on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of ‘the songs that shaped rock and roll.’. Another very popular Redding-style version was that of the Commitments, in 1991.
