The following three albums continued his success: Lovehatetragedy in 2002, Getting Away With Murder in 2004 and The Paramour Sessions in 2006. These works were followed by Metamorphosis in 2009, The Connection in 2012, F.E.A.R. in 2015, Crooked Teeth in 2017 and, two years later, Papa Roach’s last album to date, Who Do You Trust?.

In their early years, the band was described as nu metal and rap metal. Over time, the group added other sounds to their music, such as hard rock, metal, and alternative rock.

The group’s name comes from Shaddix’s grandfather, Howard William Roatch, who had the nickname ‘Papa Roach’. Roatch committed suicide in 2006 and, therefore, the group pays tribute to him on the album The Paramour Sessions, with the song ‘Roses on My Grave’. The band has sold more than 24 million records worldwide.

On the first two albums, Old Friends from Young Years (1997) and Infest (2000), Papa Roach tended to use rap metal and nu metal.

Since Lovehatetragedy (2002), their music has transformed away from rap and towards a less vocal sound. rhythmic, being best described as alternative metal Rock.

On their single, ‘…To Be Loved’ from their album, The Paramour Sessions, they feature bits of their old nu metal sound, with rapping on the first and last verses, despite being a hard rock album.

Additionally, with their album Metamorphosis, as the name itself puts it, the band feels that their music is going for a big shift to ‘things that are more…fast and hard’, compared to the alternative rock sound of their previous albums. Since their seventh album, the band presents electronic elements, in Kick In The Teeth, by Time For Annihilaton, they use a punk style accompanied by distorted sounds.

In The Connection and F.E.A.R they reincorporate elements of punk, pop, rap, electronica, and of course metal.

Frontman Jacoby Shaddix said the following in an interview with ‘Dallas Music Guide’ regarding the absence of rap in his songs: ‘…the rap is gone! I don’t feel like rapping anymore. I just want to rock. It’s what I always wanted to be when I was a kid.’ Shaddix has also said in a recent interview: ‘we’re a band that tries to walk that line between metal, hardcore, punk and pop, and we try to make it sound cool.
