Une explication détaillée des raisons pour lesquelles le Concerto pour piano n°2 de Rachmaninov est une œuvre de génie incontestablement épique
Vous connaissez le deuxième mouvement, bien sûr. Mais l’ensemble de ce concerto est l’une des plus grandes œuvres du répertoire pour piano. Même dans ses moments les plus réservés, vous aurez la tête entre vos mains, implorant grâce.
Tout d’abord, regardons l’état dans lequel se trouvait Sergueï Rachmaninov en 1900, lorsqu’il commença à composer cet imposant chef-d’œuvre pour piano. Il avait été absolument mis au pilori dans la presse pour sa Symphonie n°1 quelques années auparavant et, pour le moins, il était un peu vexé à ce sujet.
Rachmaninov aurait été incapable de composer quoi que ce soit sans la thérapie à la Derren Brown qu’il a reçue d’un homme du nom de Nikolai Dahl, à qui le concerto était dédié. Grâce à son cours d’hypnothérapie, Rachmaninov était à nouveau capable de fracasser de belles mélodies et des parties de piano croustillantes. Le deuxième concerto pour piano marquait le retour de Rachmaninov et, comme lorsque Take That revenait en tant qu’homme-groupe aux coupes de cheveux souples, ce fut un énorme succès commercial. Juste ce dont il avait besoin.
Ça commence avec rien d’autre que le piano
Un geste audacieux, chap. Geste audacieux.
Puis le premier mouvement devient une tempête de thèmes différents, transmis autour du piano et du reste de l’orchestre dans un maelström d’interconnectivité, jusqu’à la fin imposante, un bon vieux cliquetis en ut mineur.
Le morceau que tout le monde connaît
Ah oui, le deuxième mouvement. Une époque de sentimentalité, l’apogée même de l’émotion.

Mais il ne s’agit pas uniquement du deuxième mouvement.
La finale est une bête. Il y a beaucoup de viande, mais cela vaut la peine d’y jeter un petit coup d’œil à la toute fin, où la vitesse devient soudainement incontrôlable et se précipite vers un point culminant vraiment sourd. Comme vous pouvez le constater, cela ressemble à un véritable cauchemar :
