Romance for Trombone and Piano is a most lovely work of about 4.5 minutes in length. It just shines all the way through and is a perfect work to perform on a recital. It is appropriate for moderately advanced performers (all in bass clef) with its range going up to a high B-flat and down to a low E-flat with the valve (optional).

The Romance for Trombone and Piano was given its premiere at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen in 1916 in an Orchestral version and with Axel Jørgensen‘s friend Anton Hansen as soloist. Thisfully tonal Scandinavian work of charm, intelligence and lyricism was well received, though the Orchestral parts were destroyed in the bombings of the Second World War. Jørgensen produced this Trombone and Pianoversion a few years after the premiere and it continues to enjoy performances and recordings today.

Axel Jørgensen

Axel Jørgensen was a violinist and trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. After a brief period as a violinist in the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra he was engaged as a violist in the Royal Danish Orchestra, where he worked until his death. He was a good friend of the orchestra’s then solo trombonist Anton Hansen, and it was presumably this friendship that inspired him to write a number of works for brass instruments, including Capriccio Orientale for trumpet and orchestra, a trombone concerto and a number of chamber works for trumpet and trombone with piano accompaniment.

Works

  • Romance for Trombone and Piano, Op.21
  • Suite for Trombone and Piano, Op.22 (Dedicated to Anton Hansen)
  • Caprice Orientale for trumpet and piano
  • Brass Quintet (1942)
