Barry Manilow (short bio)
Born in Brooklyn , New York , United States , on June 17 , 1943 . His real name is Barry Alan Pincus. His parents, Edna and Harold Pincus, were of Russian, Jewish and Irish descent. His father left the family when Barry was just two years old. Edna legally changed her own last name and that of her son, using her maiden name for both of them ever since: Manilow. He grew up in the lower-class neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and from an early age he was very fond of music. At only seven years old he learned to play the accordion and the piano and at thirteen he was already singing. At the age of 21 he married his childhood sweetheart, Susan Deixler. However, due to his artistic commitments, the marriage came to an end two years later.
When he finished high school, he immediately became interested in music and began his studies at the “New York College of Music and Julliard”, while working in the internal mail at CBS to be able to pay for his studies. While at CBS and at the age of 18 In tow, he met the director of a musical who asked him to arrange some songs. In 1967 he took his first steps as an arranger for the famous American producer Ed Sullivan ‘s specials .
It has stood out for its cult of lounge pop songs, following the lineage of the crooners, those voices that clung to the microphone as if it were the woman they loved. One of his first hits marked him forever and made him a place in North American music: “Mandy.” It is for this song that everyone remembers them, beyond the distinctions they collected in their career ( awards Grammy , Tony , Emmy nomination , even an Oscar ) and the 50 million records they have sold.

In his beginnings with music, he worked as a composer of advertising jingles. His relationship with music started very early and at the age of 7 he was playing the piano and a neighbor’s accordion. When he graduated from high school he went to New York College Of Music And Julliard. In addition, he had already started working at CBS, where he delivered internal mail. It was there where it began to develop. The director of a musical asked him to arrange the themes of a play but Barry – who was only 18 years old – chose to write the entire score. The musical remained on the bill for 8 years.
While singing and composing music for commercials, he continued to develop within CBS. His next task would be to direct some episodes of a television series. Until, in 1972, he met Bette Midler and became her pianist, arranger and musical director. The album The Divine M, which would earn Midler her first Grammy, would feature Barry’s pen in co-producing the arrangements, as would the following album, Bette Midler.
The Bell record company offers him a contract to go solo, however, he chooses to stay in Bette Midler’s band, who was about to begin an extensive tour of the United States . The show would have two parts and the second would be opened by Barry, which would cause the general public to begin to know and admire him. In 1974 it was released only with one of its own songs, “Mandy”, the first of 25 songs that would consecutively reach the Top 40 of Billboard magazine.
In 1977, the ABC network broadcast a special dedicated to Barry that was followed by 37 million viewers and earned him an Emmy Award for Best Special of the Year. Between ’78 and ’80, the television network would produce three more specials, which would establish Manilow as the most popular singer. The result leaves its indelible mark on the shelves, ensuring that five of his first six albums remained at the top of the charts. From this time is another of his great hits, “Copacabana (At The Copa)”.
Between ’81 and ’82, the Brooklyn musician would undertake a record-breaking tour of the United States, which would break several of the records held until then by the Rolling Stones . The “manilowmania” landed shortly in England and resulted in an extensive series of concerts at the legendary Royal Albert Hall . The shows lead to a live British album that reaches triple platinum status.
In 1984 , the musician decided to give himself a great treat and take a leap in quality in his career: he recorded a series of lounge songs from the 40s, 50s and 60s with Sarah Vaughan , Gerry Mulligan , Mel Tormé and Shelly Mann . In the second half of the 80s he wrote his autobiography and, on an extensive two-year tour of the United States and Europe, he reviewed his extensive discography. He then embarked on a major compilation of Broadway classics . He titled the album Showtoppers and on it he performed songs like “Give my regards to Broadway” and “Miss Saigon.”
During the 90s and the current decade, Manilow divided his time between music for films, theater pieces, musicals, remake albums and Christmas albums, among many other projects. His most recent work compiles classics from the 50s, such as “Venus” and “Moments to remember”, and he has a similar one, also in 2006 , with an album where he performs classics from the 60s.
