Single 1973: 'PIANO MAN' (Billy Joel)

On November 2, 1973, the first single in North America by pianist and composer Billy Joel was published in the United States. It is written in 3/4 time with clear autobiographical overtones from the point of view of a bar pianist who remembers situations and characters that he has experienced and known while sitting at his piano. A year earlier, Joel was going through conflicts with his record company due to its poor management of Billy's debut album, 'Cold Spring Harbor'. Deciding to change labels, he put his lawyers to work on resolving the contract. Meanwhile, he took a break playing under the pseudonym Bill Martin at a piano lounge in Los Angeles. There he performed for six months collecting experiences for his song. All the characters that appear in it are based on real people.

It was the preview of the album of the same name that appeared a week later, already under his new label, Columbia, which marked his revelation as a new international star.

Several versions have been recorded in Spanish with lyrics that differ from the original, written by the Spanish singer-songwriter Victor Manuel for the version recorded in 1980 by his partner, the singer Ana Belén. In it, the lyrics focus more on the pianist and his past. The bar patrons are barely mentioned. Other versions are those of Témpano (Venezuela), Lira N'Roll (Mexico) and Guillermo Guido (Argentina)

Joel was always surprised by the song's success. Both in 1973 when it was released, and 47 years later when, performing at the Bonnaroo festival before a mostly young audience, the audience sang the chorus word for word. 'If it's just a long old song about a guy in a depressing piano bar...'

Single 2023: 'NOW AND THEN' (Beatles)

On November 2, 2023, 'Now and then' was published, considered 'the last Beatles song', it was originally recorded by John Lennon in the late 1970s as a homemade voice and piano demo. The piece traveled a five-decade path of 'musical archaeology' before finally being completed by surviving members, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Paul, George and Ringo first worked on John Lennon's demo in February 1995 as part of 'The Beatles Anthology' project, but it remained unfinished, partly due to the enormous technological challenges involved in working with the vocals that John had recorded on cassette tape in the 1970s.

For years it seemed that the song would never be completed. But in 2022, a stroke of luck occurred. A software system developed by Peter Jackson and his team, used during the production of the documentary series Get Back, eventually paved the way for separating John's voice from his piano part. As a result, the original recording was able to be revived and revised with contributions from all four Beatles. The song gained universal recognition, debuting at number one in both the United Kingdom and Germany. Additionally, he made history at the 67th Grammy Awards by winning in the category of best rock performance, cementing the legacy of the four Beatles decades after they first conquered the world.
