Single 1969: ‘WHOLE LOTTA LOVE’ (Led Zeppelin)
On November 7, 1969, the single 'Whole lotta love' was released in Japan and the United States, from the second album by the British band Led Zeppelin published a couple of weeks earlier, on October 22. It was also published as a single in Germany (where it was No. 1), Holland, Belgium, France and Spain. In the United States it reached 4th place and was a gold record, being Led Zeppelin's only top 5 in the United States. Jimmy Page's riff that started the song was voted 'the best guitar riff of all time' by BBC Radio2 listeners. However, the piece has not been lacking in controversies. Its lyrics are practically the same as those of Willie Dixon's song 'You need love' written in 1962 for Muddy Waters.
In 1985, Dixon filed a lawsuit demanding his copyright and the matter was settled out of court with a financial settlement and the inclusion of Dixon among the authors of the song. On the other hand, the British group The Small Faces had already recorded in 1966 a very similar song called 'You need loving' for their second album signed by Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriot, which was certainly inspired by Robert Plant whose vocal style in 'Whole lotta love' is too reminiscent of Marriott's in 'You need loving’. Curiously, the Small Faces never received any lawsuit from Dixon, whom Led Zeppelin fans reproached for having waited 17 years to claim their rights.
LP 1978: ‘THE GAMBLER’ (Kenny Rogers)
On November 7, 1978, the sixth album by country singer Kenny Rogers was published, published by United Artists and produced by Larry Butler, perhaps the best known internationally. Both the title track written by Don Schlitz and 'She Believes in Me' by Steve Gibb were No. 1 on the country charts and top20 and top5 respectively on the Hot100, allowing Rogers to become known beyond country circles and establish himself as one of the most successful artists of the 70s and 80s.
