LP 1970: ‘TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION’ (Elton John)

On October 30, 1970, the third album by British pianist and singer Elton John was published. Recorded at Trident Studios in London under production by Gus Dudgeon, it was a concept album based on the American West and Elton provided the appropriate musical atmospheres with country, blues and gospel elements to Taupin's lyrics that dealt with fugitives from the law, gunmen, settlers, farms, Yankees and Confederates. Although the cover image appears to have been taken in America, it is actually from an English station 50 km south of London.

John dared to experiment with his music and some of the songs did not follow the traditional structures of contemporary pop such as 'Burn down the mission' with its four key changes. According to some critics, the album continued to suffer from excessive arrangements and orchestration, which was carried out by Paul Buckmaster. A song not composed by John and Taupin was included, 'Love song', a song written by British singer-songwriter Lesley Duncan that accompanies John duetting with his voices and acoustic guitar.

In the same sessions, a first version of 'Madman across the water' was recorded with Mick Ronson on electric guitar, which was part of the 1995 and 2001 reissues. Several musicians participated in the recording, such as Caleb Quaye on guitar, Herbie Flowers on bass, and Tony Burrows and Dusty Springfield on backing vocals, as well as bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson (future rhythm section of Elton's band) who were making their debut together. with the pianist on the song 'Amoreena'. The album was number 2 on the British charts and top 5 on the American Billboard 200, as well as in countries.

LP 1971: 'MEDDLE' (Pink Floyd)

On October 30, 1971, the sixth studio album by the British band Pink Floyd was released. Produced by the group themselves, it was recorded in various London studios during the free days they had left between concerts in the first half of 1971. With the idea of ​​what they had in mind unclear, they separately recorded several experimental pieces which, eventually combined and united, inspired the main song 'Echoes' that occupied an entire side of the vinyl. With a similar but more consistent structure than that of its predecessor, 'Atom Heart Mother', in Meddle the guitar and the presence of David Gilmour, solo voice on most of the songs, also began to emerge in Meddle, as well as details and musical structures that already left clues to later works such as 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'Wish You Were Here'. In a way 'Meddle' marked the transition in Pink Floyd's sound from psychedelia to progressive art-rock. In the United Kingdom it was top 5 and in the United States it did not go above number 70 due to a lack of promotion by its American label Capitol Records.

In 1995, a Fort Wayne (Indiana) newspaper suggested the curious synchronicity between the music of the album 'Dark Side of the Moon' and the visual part of the film 'The Wizard of Oz' starring Judy Garland. Likewise, they suggested that the theme 'Echoes' from 'Meddle' coincided synchronously with the episode 'Jupiter and Beyond Infinity' from the film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. Both Waters and Gilmour have repeatedly stated that in both cases it was a simple coincidence.
