LP 1968: ‘ELECTRIC LADYLAND’ (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
On October 16, 1968, the third and final album by Hendrix and his band Experience was published in the United States (in the United Kingdom it appeared on October 25). Published in double vinyl format, it was recorded in the newly opened Record Plant studios in New York where it included all the technological advances that had been developed in recording studios in recent years. Hendrix experimented endlessly with echoes, flangers and chorus effects and his often exaggerated perfectionism led him to repeat countless takes of the instrumental tracks before being satisfied with the result (50 takes were taken for 'Gypsy Eyes'). This unnerved the producer and manager Chas Chandler, who also observed that the sessions in the studio, more than a place of work, had become parties and happenings for friends and sycophants of the guitarist. It was Hendrix who finally appeared in the credits as responsible for the production. On the other hand, Jimi's relations with bassist Noel Redding were not going through the best moment and Hendrix recorded several bass tracks in Redding's absence. All these tensions did not prevent Hendrix from producing his best work and one of the masterpieces of the rock era with songs such as 'Voodoo child' (with Stevie Winwood on the organ and Jack Casady on bass), 'Crosstown traffic', 'Burning of the midnight lamp', '1983...(A merman I should turn to be)' and his magnificent version of Dylan's song 'All along the watchtower', praised by its own author. Other notable collaborators included Dave Mason, Brian Jones, Al Kooper, Chris Wood and the Sweet Inspirations.
Three weeks after the album was released, it already topped the US Billboard charts, becoming Hendrix's biggest commercial success and the only No. 1 of his career. The album cover changed depending on the country. In the United States it appeared with an image of Hendrix polarized in yellow and red and in Europe a photograph of a group of 19 naked women looking at the camera. None of them was Hendrix's favorite: a color shot taken by Linda Eastman with the band members surrounded by children in Central Park next to a statue of Lewis Carroll's Alice.
