Biography

  • Full Name & Birth: Jørgen Axel Jørgensen was born on October 23, 1881, in the village of Skiveholme Terp, Jutland, near Aarhus.
  • Death: He passed away in Copenhagen in 1947.

Musical Career

  • Education: Showing early musical talent, he entered the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen at the age of 16 to train as a violinist.
  • Performances: After a stint with the Copenhagen Philharmonic, he successfully auditioned for the Royal Danish Orchestra in 1919 as a violinist. He later became the orchestra's principal violist and was appointed solo violinist in 1932, a position he held until his death. He was also a member of the Breuning-Bache Quartet.

Musical Works & Style

  • Compositional Style: Jørgensen composed in a melodic, late-Romantic style, and his works are noted for their Danish Nationalistic Romantic sensibility. As a violist himself, he understood instrumental capabilities well, leading him to write many works for his colleagues, especially those in the brass section.
  • Key Compositions: His most famous work is undoubtedly the "Romance for Trombone and Piano, Op. 21". Premiered at Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens in 1916, it was dedicated to his friend, the pioneering trombonist Anton Hansen. Other important works include:
    • Suite for Trombone and Piano, Op. 22 (also dedicated to Anton Hansen)
    • Caprice Orientale for trumpet and piano
    • Brass Quintet (1942)
    • Fantasia Legend for trombone and piano

Legacy

Despite living in the shadow of his famous contemporary, Carl Nielsen, Jørgensen carved out a unique niche as one of the first Danish composers to write for the emerging slide trombone. His works for solo trombone gained a lasting, international reputation and remain part of the standard repertoire, enduring as his primary legacy. The biographical profile of him written by Per Gade is also a notable reference for musicians studying his work.
