Who is George Nevada?
George Nevada (1939–2014) is a pseudonym used by the prolific German composer, pianist, and music educator Manfred Schmitz.
He is best known for creating accessible, highly melodic educational piano pieces that seamlessly blend classical romanticism with jazz, pop, and New Age styles.
Musical Legacy and Identity
For years, George Nevada was considered a "mystery man" among piano teachers and students because very little personal biographical information existed under that name. His works were primarily published by Schott Music, who listed him simply as a German composer born in 1939 and deceased in 2014. It was later understood by educators and music historians that Nevada was a pen name for Manfred Schmitz, allowing Schmitz to publish lighter, jazz-influenced "New Age" teaching collections under a different brand.

Nevada’s pieces are highly regarded for their intuitive simplicity, emotional depth, and memorable melodies. They are frequently selected by exam boards like the ABRSM for graded student repertoire:
