Django Bates - Summer Fruits (and Unrest) (1993)

Summer Fruits (and Unrest) is an acclaimed album by British jazz composer and pianist Django Bates, originally released in 1993 by the prestigious German record label JMT (Jazz Music Today). The work is widely considered a cornerstone of his discography, characterized by a unique blend of virtuosity, complex metric shifts, carefully structured dissonances, and a very British, surreal sense of humor.

Structure and Musical Lineups

The album is organized around two of the most important musical ensembles led by Bates:

  • Human Chain: His small-combo formation (quartet/quintet), used to explore electric textures, angular pop influences, and dizzying rhythmic shifts.
  • Delightful Precipice: A nearly 20-piece experimental big band that brings to life dense, theatrical arrangements, heavily inspired by circus music and jazz architects like Gil Evans and George Russell.

Track list:

The album consists of 11 tracks composed entirely by Django Bates:

  1. Tightrope (1:17)
  2. Armchair March (6:59)
  3. Food for Plankton (In Detail) – Performed by Human Chain (5:04)
  4. Säd Afrika – Performed by Human Chain (6:08)
  5. Three Architects Called Gabrielle: Just What I Expected – Performed by Human Chain (6:14)
  6. Queen of Puddings (8:18)
  7. Hyphen – Performed by Human Chain (5:32)
  8. Nights at the Circus (4:19)
  9. Discovering Metal (3:50)
  10. Little Petherick – Performed by Human Chain (6:31)
  11. March Hare Dance (3:02)

Featured Musicians:

The album gathers a selection of the elite from the 1990s British contemporary jazz scene:

  • Django Bates: Piano, keyboards, and peck horn (tenor horn in E-flat).
  • Iain Ballamy: Alto and soprano saxophones (Bates' key musical partner).
  • Julian Argüelles: Baritone saxophone.
