What is Naruto?
Naruto is a wildly popular Japanese manga and anime series that has become a global cultural phenomenon. It tells the coming-of-age story of Naruto Uzumaki, a loud, hyperactive teenage ninja who dreams of becoming the leader of his village, the Hokage, to gain the respect and acknowledgment he was denied as a child.
Naruto: The Core Story
- Creator: The series was written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto.
- Plot Premise: The story follows Naruto Uzumaki, an outcast boy who carries a powerful nine-tailed fox demon spirit sealed within him. Shunned by his village, he is determined to become the strongest ninja and earn everyone's respect. The series follows his training, friendships, and battles against rogue ninjas, dark organizations, and powerful ancient forces.
- Themes: At its heart, the series explores themes of hard work versus innate talent, the pain of loneliness, the cycle of hatred, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship and found family.
A Global Phenomenon
- Massive Popularity: The manga, serialized from 1999 to 2014, sold over 250 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series in history. The anime (2002–2017) was a cornerstone of international television, introducing an entire generation to anime.
- Part of the "Big Three": Naruto is famously considered one of the "Big Three" anime of its era, alongside Bleach and One Piece, which dominated the Western anime boom of the 2000s.
The Saga in Two Parts
The narrative is told across two anime series that follow the manga's storyline:
- Naruto: Covers Naruto's pre-teen years, focusing on his early ninja training, his team (Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno) under the guidance of the legendary copy-ninja Kakashi Hatake, and his rivalry with the prodigy Sasuke.
- Naruto: Shippuden: Picks up two and a half years later, following an older, more mature Naruto as he faces world-ending threats and a powerful criminal organization called the Akatsuki.
The story's legacy continues with a sequel series, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, which focuses on the children of the original cast.
