Franz Liszt, having written his 2-piano transcription of Beethoven’s 9th symphony in 1851, finished the first three movements of the piano solo version in the years 1863/64.

By historical records and even the score itself, it is evident that Liszt had issues finishing the final 4th movement – he was, in places, unable to detach the choral part from the piano reduction due to the large complexity of the original work.

Nevertheless, the 4th movement was completed in 1865 and the entire collection of transcribed Beethoven symphonies for solo piano was published the same year with a dedication to Hans von Bülow, Liszt’s son-in-law.
