Bruno Coulais

Bruno Coulais (Paris, January 13, 1954) is a French composer, known for his compositions for film soundtracks.

Coulais began his musical training, studying the violin and piano with the goal of becoming a composer of contemporary classical music. During his studies, he took a practical course in a Paris auditorium, where he was introduced to François Reichenbach, who asked him in 1977 to compose the music for his documentary México Mágico.

This experience allowed him to do other similar jobs. Until the end of the 1990s, he remained in a low profile, composing mainly for television. His name is often found in television movies by Gérard Marx and Laurent Heynemann. He also composed the soundtracks for the films Le petit prince a dit by Christine Pascal and Le fils du requin by Agnès Merlet, in 1992 and 1993 respectively.

In 1994, he met the television director Josée Dayan, who allowed him to write a theme for the television series La rivière esperance, broadcast on France 2 in the fall of 1995. He worked again with Dayan with other major productions such as Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, Balzac and Les nuiteux.

The most important turning point in his career came in 1996 when he worked with the directors Claude Nuridsany and Marie Pérennou on the documentary Microcosmos. This film, with a powerful musical composition performed by the A Filetta choir, was a great success and made Coulais one of the most sought-after composers in France.

In 1997, he won the César award for best soundtrack, as well as the Victoire de la Musique award. His reputation was confirmed with the soundtracks for Himalaya (1999), for which he again featured the performance of A Filetta, and The Purple Rivers (2000).

After producing the soundtrack for Winged Migration in 2001, Coulais announced that he wanted to significantly reduce his contributions to film music and concentrate on other projects, such as creating an opera for children.

However, in 2002 he provided the music for the animated film L’enfant qui voulait être un ours and two years later he composed the soundtrack for Christophe Barratier’s successful film Les Choristes, leading him to win another César Award. Since then, Coulais’ collaborations in the cinema seem to be limited to works by directors with whom he already shares some history, notably Jacques Perrin, Frédéric Schoendoerffer and James Huth.

Other notable projects by the musician include the soundtracks for Coraline (2009), Océans (2010), Song of the Sea (2014), Mune: Guardian of the Moon (2015), Journal d’une femme de chambre (2015) and White Fang (2018).
