Dario Marianelli Biography

Dario Marianelli was born in Pisa in 1963, and studied piano and composition in Florence and London. After a year as a postgraduate composer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he was also President of the Contemporary Society of Music, he received a fellowship from the Gulbenkian Foundation for a course taught by Judith Weir and Lloyd Newson at Bretton University College, on the subject of composition and choreography.

Further scholarships enabled him to go to Germany for a series of assignments on European film music, and to spend three years at the National Film and Television School, graduating in 1997.

Over the past few years Dario has written music for various films, dramas, TV, documentaries, animations, theater, contemporary dance and concerts. He has written orchestral pieces for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Britten-Pears Orchestra, vocal music for the BBC Singers, and incidental music for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Awards

The composer has received multiple nominations for his works, and thanks to the score for Atonement, Desire and Sin he won the Oscar and the Golden Globe, two of the three major film music awards.

For this production, Dario Marianelli worked alongside arranger and conductor Benjamin Wallfisch, who conducted the orchestra on the soundtrack recording at Air Lyndhurst Studios in London.

In addition to choirs and symphonic music, as well as the use of a female voice singing lament songs, the Italian included ethnic instruments within the recording. One of them, for example, is the duduk, a double-reed woodwind instrument that comes from Armenia, a republic located in the southern Caucasus. This score earned Dario Marianelli a nomination at the 34th Goya Awards.
