Taylor Alison Swift (West Reading, Pennsylvania, December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter, producer, director, actress and businesswoman.

Raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee at age 14 to pursue a country music career. She was signed to independent record company Big Machine Records and became the youngest artist signed by Sony/ATV Music Publishing House.

In 2006, she released her self-titled debut album, which established her as a star in country music.

‘Our Song’, her third single, made her the youngest person to solo write songs and perform a number one song on the Hot Country Songs chart. In 2008, she received a nomination for best new artist at the 50th Grammy Awards.

She released her second album, Fearless, in 2008. The album was a huge success with singles like ‘Love Story’ and ‘You Belong with Me’. Fearless was the best-selling album of 2009 in the United States, and won four Grammy Awards. Swift also became the youngest singer to win the Grammy for album of the year until 2020.

Fearless also received the plaudits of the year at the American Music Awards, the Academy of Country Music Awards and the Country Music Association Awards, which became the most awarded album in the history of country music.

In 2010, he released his third album, Speak Now, which sold a million copies in its first week in the United States. She then undertook her Speak Now World Tour, which included many dates and was attended by more than two million fans. The first singles, ‘Mine’ and ‘Back to December’ were highly successful on the music charts, while the album’s third single, ‘Mean’, won two Grammys.

In 2012, she released her fourth album, Red, which sold 1.2 million copies in its first week in the United States. The lead single, ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’, became Swift’s first number 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while the third single, ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’, achieved even greater success internationally.

Her fifth album, 1989, much more pop-focused than her predecessors, was released in October 2014 and sold more copies in its first week than any other album released in the last twelve years, with 1,280,000, making Swift the first and only artist to have three albums sell over a million copies in one week. The first single, ‘Shake It Off’, debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks at the top, until her second single ‘Blank Space’ reached number 1, surpassing the single previous to her.

With this, Swift made history, becoming the first woman in the fifty-six years of the Billboard Hot 100 to dethrone her own song and replace herself in the first place. The third single from the album, ‘Style’ received great critical acclaim and entered the top 10 on various charts.

Meanwhile, the fourth single, ‘Bad Blood’, held the record for the most viewed video in one day in the entire history of YouTube, with more than twenty million visits, in addition to being Swift’s fourth single to reach number 1 Billboard Hot 100 due to its digital sales. And to also mention that the tour in support of the album The 1989 World Tour has grossed $250 million on four continents, becoming the tour with the most tickets sold in 2015.3

This makes 1989 the most successful album of Taylor Swift’s career, with sales of over 10 million and all of its singles in the top 10.4 The album won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, making Swift the first female artist to have received the award in this category twice.

She is known for writing great narrative songs and compositions about her personal experiences. As a songwriter, she has been honored by the Nashville Songwriters Association and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Swift’s other accomplishments include eleven Grammy Awards, one Emmy, 25 Billboard Music Awards, 30 American Music Awards, one Brit Award, six MTV Video Music Awards, eleven Country Music Association Awards, as well as two Golden Globe nominations, sold more than 50 million albums and 150 million digital downloads of her singles, making her one of the best-selling recording artists in the world.

In addition to her long musical career, she appeared as a guest actress in an episode of the television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2009); she acted in the comedy film Valentine’s Day (2010), in the animated film The Lorax (2012) in which she provided her voice to the character of Audrey, and had a supporting role in the film The Giver (2014). As a philanthropist, she supports arts education, children’s literacy, natural disaster relief funds, feminism, LGBT rights, and charities for sick children.

Due to various factors, such as her impact on the world of music, her great commercial success and her media influence, she was named in 2019 as the ‘woman of the decade’ by Billboard magazine, while at the American Music Awards she was recognized as the ‘artist of the decade’. According to data provided by the IFPI, she is the most successful female artist of the 2010s.
