The Piano Guys
The Piano Guys are an American musical group formed by Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, Paul Anderson, and Al van der Beek. They gained popularity through YouTube, where they uploaded adaptations of well-known songs for piano and cello, and classical music.
Schmidt and Nelson’s music is accompanied by videos recorded and edited by Paul Anderson and previously by Tel Stewart. His first four major albums were The Piano Guys, The Piano Guys 2, A Family Christmas, and Wonders. All of them reached number one on the Billboard New Age and Classical Albums.
Paul Anderson had a piano store in St. George, Utah. He met the musician Jon Schmidt, who asked him if he could practice there, but he had a concert coming up soon.
Months later, Paul Anderson and Tel Stewart (then just for fun) started making videos together with Jon Schmidt. Soon after, the three began collaborating together, Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, and Al van Der Beek at the Wayback Machine, as a sound technician.
That YouTube has become the best springboard for new musicians is well known by all, and if we add to this surprising marketing and the adaptation of famous songs, success continues to grow, ask bands like: Boyce Avenue, the violinist Lindsey Stirling (she recently appeared in a new video for The Piano Guys), or the twins Camille and Kennerly (The Harp Twins), who have seen an open door to triumph bringing international hits by great artists to their instrumental and particular style.
Among all these great groups and artists, The Piano Guys stand out, possibly the predecessors of all of them, those who knew how to make the most of, not only their talent with instruments and production, but also the possibilities that the network showed.
The second work of this duo (Jon Schmidt on piano and Steven Sharp Nelson on cello) causing a sensation on YouTube is the album of the same name, The Piano Guys, which includes sixteen amazing adaptations and medleys of the classic genre, pop… All international numbers 1.
The music videos and works that they have been publishing are enormously inspiring, especially for the dedication, virtuosity, and love for music that both have managed to capture in all their videos, and for a masterful technical section and enormous care even for the smallest detail. His pieces have strength, delicacy and heart at the same time, giving rise to work with impeccable results and a strong personality of its own.
Many of the group’s YouTube videos have more than 20 million views, and the rest more than 750,000. As of October 2015, The Piano Guys’ YouTube channel had over half a billion views and over four million subscribers.
In June 2011, The Piano Guys won YouTube’s ‘Most Up-and-Coming Channel’ award in the ‘On the Rise’ competition with the song ‘Michael Meets Mozart’ with Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson.
In September 2012, it was announced that The Piano Guys had been signed by Sony. This resulted in the worldwide release of The Piano Guys album, followed in 2013 by The Piano Guys 2, and Wonders in 2014.
