Who was Art Tatum (short bio)

Art Tatum was born nearly blind on October 13, 1910, in Toledo , Ohio (United States).

Son of Arthur Tatum, Sr., guitarist, and Mildred Hoskins, played piano. He had two siblings, Karl and Arlene.

From infancy, he suffered from cataracts which left him blind in one eye, and with the very limited view on the other. After undergoing various surgical processes, to improve your vision, but, it deteriorated when he was assaulted in 1930.

Art Tatum learned to play by ear, listening to church hymns, melodies from the radio and recordings owned by his mother.

In 1932, he moved to the city of New York to accompany Adelaide Hall , with which he made his first recording. He was soon hired as a soloist for different jazz clubs of the 52nd street West of Manhattan.

Recognized for his virtuosity and his improvisations, in 1943 began in the world of solo performances, and formed a trio with the guitar – Tiny Grimes and the bass Slam Stewart . Recorded Masterpieces , with which obtained a great success, but in 1945, Tatum goes back to working alone.

Art Tatum acted in Cleveland and Chicago, and in 1936 he went off to Hollywood. There he remained for a whole year. In 1938, he was in London, and performed at several clubs, he returned to California and shortly after moved to New York permanently.

Despite the fact that he recorded at lonely hundreds of themes ( The Tatum Solo Masterpieces collects 121), was the director of a series of sessions very interesting and involving almost all the musicians of the first category of the era: Roy Eldridge , Ben Webster , Lionel Hampton , Buddy Rich and Benny Carter among others. Part of these collaborations are collected in The Tatum Group Masterpieces.

Art Tatum passed away on November 5, 1956, in Los Angeles. In 1989, he received posthumously the award Grammy to the artistic career.
