Ennio Morricone (short bio)

(Rome, 1928-2020) Italian Composer. Considered one of the greatest authors of music for the film of all time, he composed the soundtrack of more than 400 films. Their production, eminently film, is vast and extremely heterogeneous, always the center of controversy, the object of love and hatred. In February 2007, and after five nominations without an award, he received an academy honorary Academy Hollywood as a tribute to his long career.

The son of a trumpet player and a housewife, Ennio Morricone was the oldest of five brothers. Your family, middle-class and based in the neighbourhood of Trastevere, lived for a long time without hardship, but also without frills, only the salary of the parent, until the mother tried his fortune working in a clothing store. Interestingly, in the school coincided with Sergio Leone, who at the time was to become a filmmaker and for the future composer was to write soundtracks.

With only ten years, and after foguearse in the orquestina fond of Constantine Ferri, Morricone, he enrolled at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia for studying trumpet under the guidance of Umberto Semproni, and three years later he was chosen among other young students to become part of the orchestra of the institution, with which he made a tour of the Veneto region and under the direction of Carlo Zecchi.

In 1943, seeing the impressive skills of Ennio Morricone for the harmony, the professor Roberto Caggiano encouraged him to start serious studies in this discipline. By completing the course in just six months, he suggested that encaminase your training to the composition. This was what he did the following year, to study with Carlo G. Gerofano and Antonio Ferdinandi.

The director Alberto Flamini chose it as the second trunk for your orquestina, in the double lines of the first trumpet, which was no other than Mario Morricone, his own father. With this training he got used to the scenarios, professional, playing in various hotels in Rome for the american troops established in the Italian territory at the end of World War II .

After you get the title of a trumpet player, he started his career as a composer, devoting himself particularly to the vocal music and chamber. His production of “cultured” includes choral works, lieder, incidental music and camera. During the 1950s, she completed her education in composition from the hand of the great Goffredo Petrassi . In 1955 he began to arrange music for films, an activity that was interrupted by his military service. A year later, he married Maria Travia, and the next he had his first son, Marco.

For reasons solely crematísticos, in 1958, he accepted a job as an assistant director for RAI, but the first day of work left. In place of that, and still influenced by the avant-garde of his master Petrassi, he enrolled in a seminar taught by John Cage in Darmstadt. The money came from a side very different: its arrangements for television series.

It is difficult to imagine what would have been the subsequent career of Morricone, if the circumstances had become another of the Italian composers of the avant-garde (as Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono ) triumphed in the environment of Darmstadt during the 1960s. But the story he wanted in 1961, the same year that she gave birth to her daughter, Alessandra, compose his first soundtrack for the film.

It was the music for the film Il Federale , Luciano Salce. In 1964 they began their collaborations to Bernardo Bertolucci and Sergio Leone. Interestingly, it was the cinema of the latter that gave him fame: the catchy melody of For a fistful of dollars earned him immense popularity and a lot of new orders: Pier Paolo Pasolini and Gillo Pontecorvo , among others, demanded their services. At the same time, he was part of Gruppo Internazionale d Improvvisazione.

The growing film industry would leave at the end of the decade, the facet “elite” of its production, especially following the roaring success of the music for the good, The bad and the ugly (1966) directed by Sergio Leone. The formula of Morricone was as simple as it is effective: orchestrations little dense, but with a dry sound and transparent that years later would inspire many rock bands, issues that were fixed immediately in the memory of the listener, and an enormous respect for the plot and the characters of the film.

A musician of great intuition, Morricone left “speak to the history,” and he fled from the face of divismos copyright. Let’s not forget that a curious theory of Morricone is that the music of a score does not belong to the composer, but the film: “What that bonus is the need of the story told by the movie”.

From 1970 he started a new activity, the pedagogical. Teacher of composition at the Conservatory of Frosinone, had as students to Luigi de Castris and Antonio Poce, among others. This stage favored a certain return to his role as author, in the form of a collaboration with the Studio R7 of Electronic Music.

A year later, after working as always in Europe, he accepted a commission, american, specifically that of the great Edward Dmytryk, for whom he wrote the music of The human factor . Its relationship with the united States was never positive: the american way of life not appealed to him at all, refused to settle in Los Angeles and even more to learn English. Even so, he was nominated five times for an Oscar, the first in 1979 by the western Days of heaven .

After twenty years of activity, monstrous, and that meant a production quality starkly unequal, in 1983 he became a member of the Board of Directors of the association Nuova Consonanza, dedicated to contemporary music, and drastically reduced their production to the film. Despite this, he had time signing in 1984, which many consider to be his best score: the soundtrack of once Upon a time in America , the latest film of his friend Sergio Leone .

In 1986 he was nominated for the soundtrack of The mission , of Azahara Seller, but surprisingly he didn’t take the Oscar, a decision on the part of the members of the Academy of Arts and Sciences Hollywood that I always would be incomprehensible. Two years later he returned to stay at the gates of glory with a third nomination for The untouchables by Brian de Palma. Still would to be nominated on two other occasions: in 1992, by Bugsy , Barry Levinson, and in 2001, Malena , Giuseppe Tornatore. This reluctance has always been interpreted as a vote of punishment of the us criticism by the attitude of an artist of recognized militancy europhile.

Dump towards the end of the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s in their production, cultured, Morricone received an authentic rosary of awards, recognitions and awards in the form of schedules and cycles of concerts along the length and width of the whole geography of italy. The culmination was the granting, by the initiative of the prime minister Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, the title of Commendatore dell’ordine Al Merito della Reppublica Italiana in 1995.

Surprisingly, in the edition of the 2007 Oscar, Ennio Morricone has received a statuette by the Academy in recognition of his immense career. A prize that came when Morricone no longer needed, but that, as he acknowledged, “finally, I’ll keep it”.

Morricone, who continued to work at the pace that he wanted to film and television, was always a character I try hard, dry and hostile to the press and relentless with the dilettantism. She claimed not to understand the success of his music, which he attributed to the clarity of themes and the simplicity of the harmonic of many of his compositions, and claimed to be convinced that it would never work ever in the united States. Critical to all sectors, including the environment, their own method of work was aimed at their needs: “as the producers do not know too much music, I prepare three orchestrations different for my themes”.
