Elton John (short bio)

Reginald Kenneth Dwight (his real name) was born on March 25, 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England.

At the age of eleven young Reg was awarded a partial scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music.

His first professional contract was with the Northwood Hills Hotel, where he played on weekends. Elton charged £1 a night, tips apart.

His first recording dates back to July 1965, when the band he played in -Bluesology- released a single titled “Come Back Baby”: “music and lyrics by Reg Dwight” the note said. Although Elton later described this premiere as “something frankly horrible”, on this first and only occasion the artist composed both music and lyrics.

He decided to change his name, and took on the names of two friends and colleagues from the band Bluesology: Elton borrowed it from Elton Dean, the sax player who eventually joined Soft Machine, and John from the singer Long John Baldry. He later added Hercules, apparently an homage to the horse from Steptoe & Son.

The first time Elton John and Bernie Taupin appeared in the credits of an album was in November 1967; It was the song “Lord You Made The Night Too Long”, which was on the B-side of Long John Baldry’s big hit “Let The Heartaches Begin”.

His debut as Elton John, singer, was in March 1968 with the single “I’ve Been Loving You.”

Elton first appeared on BBC Radio 1 on the Stuart Henry Show in November 1968. During the show he performed three songs (“All Across The Havens”, “Lady Samantha” and “Skyline Pigeon”) which were included on the album he released. launched on the market a few months later.

As a studio pianist in the late 1960s, Elton contributed to several hit singles, including The Hollies’ “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”; “Delilah” by Tom Jones and “Gin Gan Goolie”! by The Scaffold.

Elton’s first LP was “Empty Sky”, a relatively unknown album from June 1969, and the album that truly launched Elton to stardom was “Elton John”, recorded in 1970 for a total of £7,000: “for that money you bought a townhouse then,” Elton himself would later comment.

The most special of Elton John’s albums is “The Bread & Beer Band.” This album, recorded in 1969, is valued by Record Collector magazine at over £2,000 and only one copy is believed to exist.

Elton made his live debut in America on August 25, 1970 at The Troubadour, the prestigious club in Los Angeles. He was supporting one of his idols, singer-songwriter David Ackles, and that night in the audience were Quincy Jones, Neil Diamond, Mike Love of the Beach Boys, Gordon Lightfoot, David Gates of Bread, Elmer Bernstein and Henry Mancini.

Elton truly tasted success with “Your Song” when, in January 1971, it reached number 7 in the UK charts. It is interesting to note that he had managed to gain a foothold on the American charts before, in August 1970 with “Border Song”, which barely managed to get a spot on the Hot 100.

Elton John’s first appearance on the English show Top Of The Pops was in 1971, playing piano on the song “Get It On” with the group T.Rex.

John Lennon’s last stage appearance was on November 28, 1974, together with Elton at Madison Square Garden in New York.

He achieved something unprecedented with his eleventh album, “Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy”, on June 7, 1975, becoming the first album in history to go directly to number one on the American charts. Nobody had done it before: not Elvis, not the Beatles!

“Rock Of The Westies”, from November 1975, marked Elton’s seventh number 1 on the North American charts, and was the second album in history to go directly to number one on the charts.

It is estimated that 3% of all records sold in America in 1975 were Elton John records!

That same year, Elton placed three No. 1 singles in America. It was the first time in ten years that something similar had been achieved, since only the Beatles had achieved it back in 1965.

On May 7, 1976, Elton again achieved another privilege, this time to be the first rock star of whom a wax statue was made for inclusion in the collection of the famous Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in London.

“Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, Elton’s duet with Kiki Dee, earned him a No. 1 hit on the British and American charts in 1976. According to the booklet, the song, actually the work of Elton and Bernie Taupin, had been written! composed “Ann Orson” and “Carte Blanche”!

Elton was especially pleased when “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” reached the top of the charts, as it was the first release on his own label, Rocket Records.

Elton’s fame and renown in the United States were such that in October 1977 he was the first rock star to be honored by the Hall Of Fame at Madison Square Garden in New York.

In 1979 he was the first rock star to tour the Soviet Union. She began the tour in Leningrad, where the crowd went wild with her overwhelming version of “Back In The USSR.” For the eight concerts she earned a whopping £4,000!

Over time Elton has sung duets with Kiki Dee, Cliff Richard, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, kdlang, Little Richard, Miss Piggy, Luciano Pavarotti, Tammy Wynette, RuPaul, Paul Young, Bonnie Raitt, LeAnn Rimes, George Michael and Leonard Cohen.

Although it took him a quarter of a century, on June 23, 1990 he achieved his dream: his 66th single, “Sacrifice”, earned him his first solo number 1 in England.

In 1990, Elton John pledged to donate all royalties from his singles sold in the United Kingdom to various AIDS charities. Two years later, this commitment would be expanded to also include singles sold in the United States.

In 1993, Elton surpassed a record held by Elvis Presley, who had held a single in the US Billboard Top 40 for 22 consecutive years. Since then he continues to break his own record year after year, having already surpassed the undoubtedly unmatched thirty consecutive years.

In 1994 Elton began a fruitful collaboration with Sir Tim Rice that led to the very successful soundtracks for the films “The Lion King” and “El Dorado.” They also did their own version of Verdi’s opera “Aida,” and their songs were performed by Sting, the Spice Girls, Janet Jackson and Shania Twain.

In 1995 Elton won an Oscar, thus becoming one of the few rock artists to have won this award. When he received the award (awarded for the song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from the movie “The Lion King”) he dedicated it to his grandmother Ivy in gratitude for making him sit at the piano and do scales when he was little.

In March 1997 Elton John was the first pop star to be named an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied as a child.

At the Live Aid concert Elton performed to a television audience of 1,500,000,000 people. Twelve years later, the whole world heard him sing in Westminster Abbey at the funeral of his friend Diana, Princess of Wales.

The recording of the song performed by Elton that day, the famous “Candle In The Wind 1997”, quickly became the biggest-selling single in the history of recorded music. In Canada, “Candle In The Wind 1997” spent an incredible three years in the Top 20, including an entire year at No. 1. 33 million copies of “Candle In The Wind 1997” have been sold so far. , eclipsing songs that had previously taken the top-selling title, including Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” and the Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand.”

In 1998, Queen Elizabeth II of England knighted him in recognition of “services to music and charity.” He is now Sir Elton John.

At the 2001 Grammy Awards ceremony, Sir Elton sang a duet with the controversial rapper Eminem, whose music Elton deeply admires.

It is estimated that the total sales of Elton John recordings exceed 150 million records, and in Spain there are almost two million copies.
