Eric Clapton (short bio)
(Ripley, United Kingdom, 1945) British blues guitarist. “Eric Clapton is God,” reads a popular graffiti that appeared on the streets of London in the late sixties, which serves as an indicative sample of the popularity and enthusiasm that this extraordinary guitarist aroused in British society.
Eric Clapton played in various groups, such as John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, The Yardbyrds and Cream, until, in 1972, after a period of detoxification from his heroin addiction, he definitively began his solo career, and reappeared before the public in 1974. From that moment on Clapton released various albums, such as Behind in the sun (1985), Journeyman (1989) or From the cradle (1994), in which he always maintained his rhythm & blues style. Winner of several Grammy Awards, he is considered one of the greatest blues guitarists. Cocaine , I can’t stand it , Layla or Let it grow are some of his most notable songs, as well as Tears in heaven , a song that the musician dedicated to his son Conor, who died at the age of four as a result of a tragic accident.
Born a few months before the end of the Second World War as a result of a short relationship between his mother and a Canadian soldier stationed in England, Eric Clapton began to play the piano and later practiced on his own with the guitar that his grandmother had given him. . Later, after working as a postman and bricklayer, he bought an electric Kay guitar and began playing in folk groups.
In 1961, at the age of 16, he began studying stained-glass design at the Kingston College of Art. In 1963, he began to be part of little-known bands (The Roosters and Casey Jones and The Engineers), and replaced Top Topham in the group The Yardbyrds. He then joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. In 1966, he achieved his first commercial success with the hard rock group Cream, which he formed with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce.
In 1969, Eric Clapton formed the band Blind Faith, which did not meet expectations and disbanded the following year. He then went on to play with the group Derek and The Dominos.
In 1972, he released a single called Layla , which he composed inspired by Pattie Boyd, the wife of George Harrison , former guitarist of The Beatles . This song was a huge success and marked the beginning of his solo career. She began to be called Slow Hand because of the wonders she did with the guitar strings. His problems with drugs and alcohol caused him to retire until 1974, when he reappeared with the LP 461 Ocean Boulevard, in a more clam style.
In the following years he made several appearances with the Rolling Stones , Tina Turner and Dire Straits. He also made several collaborations with Mark Knopfler and Phil Collins. In 1983 she toured Spain, bringing together ten thousand people in Barcelona. In 1989, after touring several African countries, he arrived in Madrid to present his new LP, Journeyman .
Misfortune struck him in 1991, when his four-year-old son Conor died after accidentally falling from the fifty-third floor of an apartment in Manhattan, which plunged him into a deep emotional crisis that led him to compose the song in heaven Tears , dedicated to his son. In 1994 he released the album From the Cradle , inspired by the great blues masters and in which he reviewed sixteen historical pieces of this music. Shortly after, he began, at the Forum in Montreal, a tour around the world and, already in 1995, a European tour with the title “Evening with the blues”.
In 1997 he participated in the Vienna Jazz Festival and the Vitoria Jazz Festival, part of the group Legends, which also included Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Steve Gadd and Joe Sample. He released a collection of his best songs on two albums in 1999: Blues (1970-1980) and Clapton Chronicles: The best of Eric Clapton (1985-1999) . Later he published the album Me and Mr. Johnson (2004), in which the British guitarist paid tribute to Robert Johnson, one of the most important blues composers in history. In 2005 he celebrated his sixtieth birthday with four concerts in London that reunited the members of the legendary group Cream, thirty-six years after their last performance together. was released The same year the studio album Back Home .
Many of Eric Clapton’s songs have been included in the soundtracks of some films, such as Homeboy (1988), Rush (1991), Phenomenon (1997), The City of Angels (1998) or The story of us (1999). . Eric Clapton married Pattie Boyd in 1979, whom he divorced in 1986. He later married Italian television star Lori del Santo, with whom he had his son Conor. On January 1, 2002, he married American graphic designer Melia McEnery. Known by his followers as Guitar Hero , he is considered an essential figure in the birth of English pop in one of its most defined aspects, rhythm and blues.
