The murder of John Lennon, the crime that shocked the world

In December 1980, former Beatles’ member John Lennon was murdered in cold blood. His death caused a great impact, since he was very loved inside and outside the world of music.

On December 8, 1980, at the door of his own home and before the eyes of his wife Yoko Ono, John Lennon was murdered .

The death of what for many fans was the most iconic and popular of the Beatles caused a great commotion in the world of music and outside of it. With Lennon, a part of the legendary band left forever, although it had already broken up years ago.

The murder was the work of Mark David Chapman , a former military man who had been planning the crime for years . In fact, after his arrest he confessed that he had already planned to murder the singer on another occasion, but that he had given up. Those who knew the murderer described him as a disturbed person who talked to imaginary people and who fantasized about “having the power of a god.”

But the murder was not a mere whim or consequence of a mental disorder: Chapman had a fanatical obsession with religion and declared that he had hated Lennon since 1966, when the singer made his famous claim that “ the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ.” ” and by the lyrics of some of his songs, particularly God and Imagine , which in his opinion disparaged faith. He claimed that Lennon was a “phony” and that he led an indecent lifestyle, for which he “had been forced” to punish him.

On the morning of December 8 , Chapman joined the crowd of fans waiting for Lennon at the entrance to the Dakota building in Manhattan , where he lived with his wife Yoko Ono. This was a common image, since groups of the singer’s fans often gathered at the door of his house to try to get an autograph from his idol. While he waited, he chatted with the fans and the doorman, without arousing suspicion. But because of this, he missed his first opportunity: he did not see Lennon get out of a taxi to enter the building, so he had to wait all day.

Chapman decided to wait for them to come out again, which didn’t happen until 5 p.m. Throughout the day he stayed chatting with fans and even met the couple’s five-year-old son, Sean Lennon, who was returning from a walk with his nanny: Chapman shook his hand and told him he was a very handsome boy. , citing the song Beautiful Boy, one of the singer’s last and which he had dedicated to his son.

Around five, the couple left the house to head to the recording studios, at which point they were approached again by fans. Chapman turned to Lennon and quietly gave him a copy of Double Fantasy , the album he had released just three weeks earlier with Ono. He signed it while a fan, Paul Goresh, who was also an amateur photographer, took a photo of the moment: he did not know that this would be the last photo of John Lennon. After the murder, that copy would become the singer’s last autograph: in 2003 it was sold at auction for $525,000, making it the most expensive album in the history of music.

Chapman described his brief meeting with Lennon this way : “Ironically, he was very kind and very patient with me. The limo was waiting, and he took his time with me, picked up the pen and signed my album. He asked me if he needed anything else. I said ‘no, no sir.’ And he walked away. “A very cordial and decent man.”

The moment of the crime

After signing the album, Lennon went with his wife to the Record Plant recording studios and did not return until late at night, almost at 11. Chapman had remained hidden waiting for them in the doorway and when he heard the limousine approaching, he headed to them and greeted them briefly with a nod, as if he were leaving the building; As Yoko Ono would explain, Lennon seemed to recognize him at that moment.

After they crossed paths, Chapman turned and shouted “Mr. Lennon!” moments before shooting him five times with a pistol . One of the bullets missed, but the other four hit him. According to the subsequent autopsy report, two bullets hit him in the left lung and one of them hit his neck, while the other two hit his left shoulder. Lennon, bleeding profusely, took a few steps towards the goal, where he shouted “I’ve been shot!” before collapsing to the ground.

José Perdomo, the doorman, took the gun out of Chapman’s hand, to whom he shouted, “Do you know what you’ve done?” He replied: “Yes, I have shot John Lennon.” Meanwhile, janitor Jay Hastings was trying to make a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, but realizing the severity of his injuries, he called the police. Chapman simply waited for them at the scene of the murder , calmly reading a book. The killer gave another sign of his strange character when he was taken away in handcuffs: one of the officers said that Chapman had apologized to them for having “spoiled their night.”

Lennon was taken to Roosevelt Hospital by the same patrol that had detained Chapman, where a desperate and futile attempt was made to save his life : they gave him a blood transfusion and tried to restore circulation and restart his heart, but the wounds were too much serious. The doctors could only confirm his death and estimated that, due to the severity of his injuries, the singer had died a maximum of 20 minutes after being shot.

The news was announced that same night and caused a great impact. His fans gathered in front of the hospital and in front of his house, while they sang the favorite songs of what had surely been the most popular of the Beatles, even after the band broke up. His former colleagues paid tribute to him , although Yoko Ono insisted on discreetly saying goodbye to him. Some of her fans became desperate when they heard the news, and at least two committed suicide, forcing Ono to publicly ask that no one else take her life.

All of this demonstrates the extent to which Lennon’s murder shocked the world, and not only in the field of music and culture: the former Beatle was a much loved and respected figure for his pacifist activism. In 1969, he and Ono participated in the famous “bedridden for peace” to protest against the Vietnam War, which simply consisted of staying in bed with protest signs. The media came, attracted by the morbidity, with which the couple achieved their objective of drawing attention to the conflict.

This activism caused him problems with the American authorities, who even considered him suspected of having communist sympathies. President Nixon, a candidate for re-election, even ordered his expulsion from the country in 1972 alleging cannabis use; an order that, finally, was not carried out when Nixon lost the elections. When Lennon’s murder occurred, conspiracy theories circulated that saw the hand of the CIA behind it, which had been monitoring the singer for years.

Today, Mark David Chapman is still serving a life sentence for the murder . In later years he gave some interviews, in some of which he claimed to feel remorse for his crime. At least five psychiatrists who have visited him have diagnosed him with schizophrenia and psychopathy, although the culprit has always defended that he “is not crazy” and that he was very aware of what he was doing when he killed John Lennon. He has requested a review of his sentence several times, but it has never been granted and almost certainly will never be granted.
