Nino Rota (short bio)

Nino Rota (Milan, 1911 – Rome, 1979) was an Italian composer famous for his film soundtracks. Coming from a family of musicians, he studied Composition at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and, in the United States, at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He worked as a teacher at the School of Music of Taranto and at the Liceo Musicale of Bari, where he held the position of director between 1950 and 1978.

He worked alongside celluloid figures such as Luchino Visconti, Franco Zeffirelli and Francis Ford Coppola, for whom he composed the music for The Godfather (1972), nominated for an Oscar for best soundtrack. With The Godfather II (1974), Rota won the coveted award. His most applauded works are those he composed for Federico Fellini, with whom he collaborated for more than a quarter of a century in films such as La dolce vita (1960), 8 y ½ (1963), Roma (1972), Amarcord (1974) or Il Casanova (1977), among others.
