Jim Hall (December 4, 1930-Manhattan, New York, December 10, 2013), began in music from a very young age. His uncle Ed encouraged him to study the guitar and made him meet the jazz greats of his time: Charlie Christian, Art Tatum and Jimmy Lunceford.

At the age of sixteen, he moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio, where he completed his formal studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music. His first steps in professional jazz were in the drum kite, Chico Hamilton, where he was between 1955 and 1956.

In the late 1950s, his name was associated with the musician-cultural current, called “Avant-Garde.” A milestone of this new era was the album “The Bridge,” recorded and led by the great tenor Sonny Rollins. He was also close to the saxophonist, Ornette Coleman, one of the creators of the “free jazz.” Since its inception, Jim Hall has composed part of his material, but lately this role has gained new momentum. His permanent need for renewal has led him to take this path. He has also not abandoned his concern as an academic composer.

Another decisive fact in his widow was his incorporation into musical teaching at the New School in New York. His alumni include guitarist Peter Bernstein, pianist and organist Larry Goldings and tenor saxophone Rasmus Lee.

Although he was always quite reluctant to participate in selected guitarists in “Dialogues,” his latest CD, are Mike Stern and Bill Frisell. This project also includes trumpet player Tom Harrell and saxophonist Joe Lovano (the latter plays in “Calypso Joe,” written especially for him and “Bon Ami,” a ballad dedicated to Django Reinhardt).

There are duets with Gil Goldstein in accordion and themes with rhythm section (bassist Scott Colley and drummer Andy Watson). Either way, Jim Hall is considered one of the great contemporary jazz guitarists, and his duets with great musicians – his favorite musical format – such as Bill Evans, Zoot Sims, Ron Carter and Michel Petrucciani, are absolutely recommended examples to check in all their splendor the creative and sober style of their music.
