André Previn emigrated with his family to the United States in 1938 fleeing the Nazi regime. He became an American citizen in 1943, settled in Los Angeles, and began his career in 1948 arranging and composing music for Hollywood films. For many years he worked in the music department of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, directed by Arthur Freed.
In the late 1950s, he recorded albums as a jazz pianist that appeared mostly on the Contemporary Records label. He collaborated with drummer, Shelly Manne and saxophonist Benny Carter. His album with Manne entitled: “My Fair Lady” (1956) was enormously successful.
In 1967, Previn was appointed conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and the following year of the London Symphony Orchestra, with which he recorded numerous prestigious albums. Other orchestras with which he collaborated closely were the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2002 to 2006 he was music director of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra.
After his career in Hollywood, he concentrated on the composition of numerous works of classical music. His first opera was “A Streetcar Named Desire”, with a libretto by Philip Littell based on the play by Tennessee Williams and premiered at the San Francisco Opera in 1998 with Renée Fleming in the role of Blanche Dubois.
In the later years of the 20th century, André Previn returned to the jazz scene, and began recording and performing jazz with bassist Ray Brown, guitarist Mundell Lowe, and drummer Grady Tate. With his trio, Previn toured Japan in December 1991, the United States in February 1993, and Europe in June 1995.
