Music

Because their music is popular with many listeners unfamiliar with classical music, the solo piano instrumentation and tendency toward “movements” often leads to labels such as “new classic,” “classical pop,” or “contemporary classic.” However, even if his composition studies had included the classics, the structure of his pieces does not reflect such forms. Her music has sometimes been loosely classified as “popular”, as evidenced by the inclusion of her hit piece River Flows in You on a compilation of wedding pieces titled “Wedding Essentials: The Ceremony”. The iTunes Store considers him a world or new age music artist.

The categorization of his style as New Age is especially common among classical musicians and listeners. However, “River Flows in You” was once played on KDFC, which is generally considered a “classical” music station. As for the structure of his music, the movement and scope required to play his pieces average around grade 7 by actual conservatory standards. Pattern and repetition figure prominently, however, making the structure more like popular themes or movie themes than traditional solo piano compositions.
