Neil Young (short biography)
Neil Percival Kenneth Robert Ragland Young, known as Neil Young , Canadian singer, born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on November 12, 1945. Son of a sports journalist, after his parents’ divorce he always lived with his mother, with whom he moved to the city of Winnipeg as a child.

Although he was a bad student, he took his first musical steps at university. He founded his first group, Neil Young & The Squires, in the mid-60s. He returned to his hometown, where he met Rick James and joined his band, Mynah Birds, where he met the man who would later become his road manager, Bruce Palmer. He later performed in cafes, where he met Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay.
With the last two he formed the band Buffalo Springfield, of which Dewey Martin was also a member. From his time with Buffalo Springfield the hits Mr. Soul, Broken Arrow and Expecting To Fly stand out. He released his first solo album in 1969 and was titled ‘Neil Young’. This album contained the famous ‘The Loner’, although Jack Nitzsche’s arrangements did not favor Neil’s music. This was proven when, on his next album ‘Everybody’s Knows This Is Nowhere’, he had a new group that changed its name and became Crazy Horse. This album is among the best of his musical career with unforgettable songs like ‘Cinnamon Girl’ and ‘Down By The River’. Shortly later he joined the supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash to form CSNY. With them he recorded the studio album ‘Déjà Vu’ and the double live album ‘4 Way Street’ while they attended the Woodstock festival.
But his restless spirit meant that for his next two intimate albums he had another group ‘The Stray Gators’ and the London Symphony Orchestra on the second. The first album is the very famous ‘After The Gold Rush’ (1970) and the second the no less popular ‘Harvest’ (1971) which contains their biggest hit on the charts around the world: ‘Heart Of Gold’. From this time is the recording of his performance at the Canadian theater ‘Massey Hall’ that has been recently released.
The death of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten due to drugs and the illness of one of Neil’s children marked the depressive nature of his work at this time. The following three albums are included in what has been called ‘Ditch Trilogy’: ‘On The Beach’, ‘Journey Thru The Past’ and ‘Tonight’s Is The Night’. These albums receive bad reviews and are hardly successful, although the first is a gem with songs of such high level as ‘Ambulance Blues’ and the second, recorded live, is not far behind either.
In 1974, he recorded again with Crazy Horse and the result was an album that was intimate in its lyrics but with great interpretive power: ‘Zuma’. One of the songs that he has subsequently performed the most live stands out: the apparently political ‘Cortez The Killer’ but which, in reality, is simply a love song.
In 1976, he recorded ‘American’ Stars Bars’, which included his great commercial success with ‘Like A Hurricane’.
In 1977, he worked on an unreleased recording, since some songs would appear in 1979 on ‘Rust Never Sleeps’, which has been called ‘Chrome Dreams I’ since Neil’s most recent album is ‘Chrome Dreams II’.

In 1977, a compilation of songs also appeared on three vinyls called ‘Decade’, made by Neil himself, which is one of the best made ‘Greatest Hits’.
In 1978, the album appeared prior to his great success with ‘Rust’. It is an album with a predominantly country sound, recorded in Nashville, and in which Crazy Horse also participates.
As has been said, in 1979 an album appeared that earned him the admiration of new generations and led him to be called the “king of grunge.” This is ‘Rust Never Sleeps’, which includes great songs like ‘Hey Hey, My My (Out Of The Blue)’, ‘Thasher’ and ‘Powderfinger’.
Shortly after, a film and a live album called ‘Rust Live’ appear.
Currently, he is still active, recording albums and touring regularly, in addition to developing other activities in the field of cinema or literature, all with a marked left-leaning political character.
