J.J. Cale (short biography)

J.J. Cale was born in 1938 (full name John Weldon Cale) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (United States). Refractory to the spotlight, he achieved world fame thanks to Eric Clapton when in 1970 he covered “After midnight” for his first solo album; But in 1977, when he did the same with “Cocaine” (for his album Slowhand ), turning it into a hit, Cale had to abandon the comfortable position he enjoyed as a cult musician admired only by minorities.

In the mid-fifties he cut his teeth in various swing and rock and roll bands. In 1964 Los Angeles was settled. He played for a few months with the duo Delaney & Bonnie and in 1965 he began to perform alone, but a year later, together with Roger Tillision he formed the psychedelic group Leathercoated Minds , with which he recorded an LP that same year with little success. In 1970, Eric Clapton recorded “After Midnight” for his self-titled debut solo album, placing the song in the top 20 in the United States.

With his name on the lips of experts, in December 1971 he released his first album, Naturally . In it he defined that catchy, relaxed style, attached to tradition and completely marked by his unique way of strumming the electric guitar that he would never abandon. Until 1976, Cale’s career can be described as reasonable, and he recorded every so often: in 1972 he released Really , in 1974 Okie and in 1976 Troubadour ( with the original take of Cocaine ).

But four years passed until their next album, 5 . In 1981 he debuted with the MCA label, for which he recorded Shades . After signing with Mercury, he recorded one album a year between 1981 and 1984, but he stopped there and was not heard from again until 1990, when he released Travel log . A few more albums followed until 1996 and he disappeared for eight years, when he returned with the celebrated To Tulsa and back . In 2006 he joined Eric Clapton to create The Road to Escondido together (with Cale signing eleven of the fourteen songs that comprised it) and in 2009 he published his latest work, Roll on (again with Clapton as a collaborator).

He died in 2013.
