A versatile musician, gifted with great technique and master of several instruments, he was already an extraordinary arranger and composer during the swing era. His orchestra, in the most brilliant period of swing, was undoubtedly an indisputable point of reference in the history of jazz. He adopted the alto sax as his preferred instrument and was, together with the exceptional Johnny Hodges, the reference point before the appearance on the scene of the great Charlie Parker.

Between 1923 and 1928, he played in numerous bands in Harlem and already in 1929, he was part of Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra, where he was masterfully in charge of the arrangements. In 1932, he formed his own orchestra where none other than Ben Webster, Teddy Wilson, Big Sid Catlett and Chu Berry played. In 1934 he traveled to Europe for the first time, already established as an excellent musician, and performed in London, Paris and Scandinavia. He returned to the US in 1938 and his band played at the Savoy Ballroom until 1940 when the decline of big bands came.

During the 1950s he participated in numerous shows and concerts around the world with the JATP of businessman Norman Granz. His recordings in Europe and the United States are an unparalleled testimony of the musical art of a musician who can be considered, without a doubt, one of the great masters of jazz. He had a captivatingly dense musical tone, an impeccable sense of rhythm and exceptional phrasing and his last years of activity were dedicated to music education at Princeton University. Benny Carter, died on July 13, 2003, in a Los Angeles Hospital.

Benny Carter and His Orchestra – Back Bay Boogie (1941)

Benny Carter: And His Orchestra: 1940 – 1941.

The fourth and final volume of the series published by the “Classics” label, which brings together in chronological order the recordings of the famous Benny Carter orchestra between 1933 and 1941, covers a period of two years, the last of the Benny Carte and its orchestra on its first European tour. Carter had deserved fame in the old continent, his work was probably more appreciated than in his own country. With his orchestra he toured the great European capitals: London, Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm, and in these four CDs, all of them with valuable music, we can admire his style.
