Son of a drummer and conductor and a mother who was a pianist and singer, the pianist, Phineas Newborn Jr, (December 14, 1931, Whiteville, Tennessee – May 26, 1989, Memphis, Tennessee), undertook musical studies as a child, deepening them later. in high school and at the University. He debuted in 1947 with Saunders King and was in Memphis with various local groups until 1950, the year in which he joined Lionel Hampton’s orchestra, with whom he remained for two years, until 1952. After a short-lived collaboration with the Tennessee State Collegians, In 1953 he played with Willis Jackson until he had to do military service.

Between 1955 and 1956 he formed his own quartet, with which, in May 1956, he moved to New York to sign a brief contract at the famous “Bassin Street” club for the following two years. He later converted his quartet into a trio and in 1958 he further reduced the group when he formed a duo with the double bassist, Charles Mingus, with whom he appeared in the John Cassavettes film: “Shadows.”

In the autumn of that same year, he traveled to Europe for the first time, achieving great success and demonstrating to the knowledgeable French public that his technical training and mastery of the piano had nothing to envy of the greatest. A long and painful illness forced him to suspend his professional career for a long time since he had to be admitted to Camarillo Hospital, the same clinic where Charlie Parker was admitted. When he resumed his activity he dedicated himself to playing regularly with fans in the Los Angeles area and fortunately his feeling was the same as before. His 1961 recordings collected on the album: “A World of piano” for the Contemporary label, continue to be considered of the greatest jazz interest.
