Victor Young (August 8, 1900, Chicago, Illinois, United States – November 10, 1956, Palm Springs, California, United States), was a prominent composer, arranger, violinist and conductor, very popular in the era of swing.

As he was the son of Polish emigrants and mastered the language of his parents, they decided to send him to Europe, thinking about his early musical education. He studied at the Warsaw Conservatory and soon demonstrated great musical gifts, surprising his teachers, who witnessed a brilliant career that led him in his teens to be the first violinist of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra.

Until that moment, his career did not suffer any setbacks; but, in 1917, he agreed to go on a concert tour in Russia, in the midst of revolutionary euphoria. Security guarantees were minimal and, in fact, he was arrested. Everything raised fears for his personal integrity when a Bolshevik officer, admired by his talent, planned the escape of Young, who seemed to be touched by bad luck, because shortly after outwitting the Russian authorities, he was arrested again, this time to Germany. , a country where his presence was not appropriate either. Once again, it was his talent as a violinist that helped him escape from prison and head to the United States.

After the busy European journey, Young decided to settle in Los Angeles, where he gained fame as a violinist. Attracted by the world of cinema, he tries his luck in the orchestra that Paramount has on staff to perform the soundtracks of its productions. To everyone’s surprise, Young began to compose and arrange scores, and he did so with such ease that he has gone down in film history as one of the most prolific musicians.

Victor Young began as a classical composer and concert violinist, but decided to move into the realm of popular music when he joined Isham Jones’ orchestra. He studied piano with Isidor Philipp, from the Paris Conservatory. In the mid-1930s he moved to Hollywood, where he concentrated on the world of cinema, recording light music and providing musical support to famous singers, including Bing Crosby.

He also collaborated in different groups and orchestras of the time, such as, for example, “The Ben Pollack And His Californians.” Among his best works as a composer, we must highlight: “When I Fall In Love,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “Around the World,” “My Foolish Heart, and, above all, “Stella by Starlight.”

Young began working with the record company, “Brunswick Records” in 1931, recording with his studio groups for dance music, waltzes and semi-classical tunes until 1934. These groups included some of the best jazz musicians in New York. of the time, including Bunny Berigan, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Venuti, Arthur Schutt, Eddie Lang, and others. Their vocalists were first class, and among them, “The Boswell Sisters” and Lee Wiley stood out. At the end of 1934 Young signed a good contract with the company “Decca Records”, with whom he remained until mid-1936, when he moved to Los Angeles.

In the radio environment, Víctor Young was musical director of many Bing Crosby recordings for Decca Records. Also for Decca, he directed the first album of songs from the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz”, with Judy Garland singing songs from the film with Young’s own arrangements.

Throughout his formidable professional career, Víctor Young had 22 Oscar nominations for his work in the world of cinema, but he did not live to see the one awarded to him, posthumously, for the soundtrack of the extraordinary film: “Around the world in eighty days” (1956). Other soundtracks on which he worked were “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (1943), “Samson and Delilah” (1949), “The Quiet Man” (1952), “Scaramouche” in 1952, or Johnny Guitar (1954).

As an occasional performer, Young can be seen briefly as an actor in the film, “The Heartbreak” (1954) directing Bing Crosby. After his death, Victor Young was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for his recording activity, at 6363 Hollywood Boulevard. In 1970 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In addition, he won two Emmys, one in 1950 for “September Affair” and another in 1954 for “Light’s Diamond Jubilee.”
