Blondie have announced the release of a new album in 2025, with production helmed by Grammy-winning producer John Congleton.

The news was shared by guitarist and co-founder Chris Stein, who posted a black-and-white photo of lead singer Debbie Harry and Congleton in the studio on Bluesky, accompanied by the caption, “With John Congleton. New Blondie record next year.”

It marks the band’s first album since 2017’s Pollinator, also produced by Congleton. That record earned critical acclaim and featured collaborations with artists like Joan Jett, Charli XCX, and Johnny Marr. Known for his work with St. Vincent and Angel Olsen, Congleton’s involvement hints at a modern, innovative approach for Blondie’s upcoming release.

Hints of the project have been circulating for months. Stein previously shared photos from the studio on Instagram, teasing fans with mentions of “a new Blondie album” and confirming on BBC Radio 6 that the record had entered the mixing phase earlier this year.

Blondie lit up the Billboard Hot 100 with four chart-topping hits that defined their genre-bending brilliance. The disco anthem “Heart of Glass” had everyone dancing in 1979, while the high-energy “Call Me” dominated in 1980. That same year, they switched things up with the reggae-infused “The Tide Is High,” and by 1981, they were breaking boundaries with the rap-meets-rock vibes of “Rapture.”

Their albums made just as big a splash. Parallel Lines (1978) climbed to No. 6 on the Billboard 200, driven by unforgettable hits like “Heart of Glass” and the gritty “One Way or Another.”

A couple of years later, Autoamerican (1980) landed at No. 7, bolstered by the massive success of “The Tide Is High” and “Rapture,” proving that Blondie’s versatility had no limits. Even earlier, Eat to the Beat (1979) had fans hooked, reaching No. 17 with tracks like “Dreaming” that became instant favorites.

About Blondie

Blondie is the name of one of the most successful and original bands of the seventies, part of the so-called New Wave and an aesthetic and musical precedent for eighties pop.

Originating in New York, the group began its musical journey in 1975 along with other local bands such as The Ramones, within the movement called punk rock which had recently appeared. Their first concerts at the CBGB hall, run by Hilly Kristal, were a platform for the band to make themselves known in the city.

After a couple of albums with successful singles such as (‘X offender’, ‘In the flesh’ or the popular ‘Denis’) in 1978 they released their third work, the album ‘Parallel lines’ ‘: a compendium of sounds between punk, garage, disco music and soft rock. The success of this album worldwide, particularly in Great Britain, the United States and Japan, comes from the popularity of some of its songs, such as: ‘Heart of glass’, ‘Sunday girl’, ‘Picture This’ or ‘One way or another’. The same year they participated in the fourth edition of the Canet Rock Festival.

The image of the band, led by vocalist Debbie Harry, began to attract the attention of the public.

Blondie’s career continued with their subsequent albums: ‘Eat to the beat’ (1979), which included songs that later became pop icons, such as ‘Atomic’, ‘Dreaming’ or ‘Union city blue’; and later ‘Autoamerican’ (1980), which included the tracks ‘The tide is high’ and ‘Rapture’, along with others that roamed other musical terrains, such as epic rock, jazz, disco music and even the sections wind metal with a Latin sound.

Their last album, ‘The Hunter’, was the least popular of all the band’s releases and coincided with their decline in 1982, which ended with the group breaking up the following year. Deborah Harry, leader, voice and image of the band (who had already released an album in 1981 called ‘Koo Koo’) embarked on a solo career with some success, although not quite matching the popularity of Blondie. In addition, she participated in some films and television series as a guest actress. Some of his songs during the 80s were ‘I want that man’ or ‘French kissin in the USA’.

In 1998, the 4 members of the original line-up of Blondie, namely Deborah Harry on vocals, Clem Burke on drums, James Destry on keyboards and Chris Stein on guitar, undertook a reconstitution of the band, which correspond with a couple of issues published internationally: ‘Maria’ and ‘Nothing is real but the girl’. In this way, the band restarted the career that had stopped years ago.

The band is currently active and has already released a new album ‘The curse of Blondie’ (2003), which contains electronic and guitar songs (‘Good boys’, ‘Undone’, ‘Goldenrod’) and they are also active for what does he do at concerts

Considered today as one of the most interesting and influential pop rock bands, a multitude of artists as different as The Strokes, Madonna, Garbage, No Doubt, Blur or The Sounds have confessed their admiration for the legendary band from New York.
