Jazz ‘n’ Samba (Só Danço Samba) by Tom Jobim

“Só Danço Samba” (aka “Jazz ‘n’ Samba”) is a bossa nova song composed in 1962 by Antônio Carlos Jobim, with lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes. English lyrics were later written by Norman Gimbel. On occasion, it has also been known as “Jazz Samba” and “I Only Dance Samba”, an English translation of the original Portuguese title.

Bossa Nova translates as new trend, but can be defined as a fusion of the
Brazilian samba and jazz. Developing in the beachside areas of Rio de Janeiro
in the 1950s and 60s, Bossa Nova features a rhythmic structure based on the
samba, a Brazilian dance popular in the region of Bahia, Brazil. (Figure 1).
Instrumentation can be more complex, but the primary instruments are vocals,
guitar and/or piano. Percussion is used judiciously. The style is laid back and low
key. Arrangements put the focus on the melody. Accompanying instruments
generally provide the harmony, although occasional vocal harmony between
voices is not out of the question. More typical, however, is unison singing, or
alternation of solos between two or more singers.

In Bossa Nova: The Story of the Brazilian Music That Seduced the World, author Ruy Castro suggests that the song was part of a failed movement to invent a bossa nova dance. “Jobim, who had never danced in his life, had just finished writing ‘Só danço samba’ [Jazz ‘n’ Samba] with Vinicius, but it was without much conviction. So much so, in fact, that on hearing ‘Só danço samba’ for the first time, João Gilberto asked him, ‘What’s this Tomzinho? A boogie-woogie?’”

The song was first performed by João Gilberto and Os Cariocas in August 1962 at the Au Bon Gourmet restaurant in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, at what Castro calls “the bossa nova show to end all bossa nova shows”, as it featured Jobim, Gilberto, Vinícius de Moraes and Os Cariocas on stage together for the first and last time.

A few months later, Gilberto and Os Cariocas performed the song again in the Italian film, Copacabana Palace (1962), in which they are briefly shown singing together.

Elza Laranjeira released the first recording of “Só danço samba” in October 1962.

Bossa Nova became popular in the United States in the early 1960s, when Stan
Getz and João Gilberto collaborated on the album Getz/Gilberto. The song
featured Astrud Gilberto on vocals, Gilberto’s wife at the time. Her rendition of
The Girl from Impanema became a huge hit. This popularity in the U.S. lead to a
flurry of less than authentic performances, which over time watered down the
genre and lead to its vilification as a type of music suitable only to hotel lounges.
However, recent recordings by Eliane Elias and Diane Krall, and soundtracks
from popular television shows like Mad Men are bringing Bossa Nova back into
favor.

While still small, his family moved to Ipanema Beach, then still untapped, and he began his music studies. What he enjoyed most was playing the piano. His first musical steps were taken in a new movement called bossa nova, a mixture of samba, jazz and Afro-American music that was played in the Copacabana venues. His work was so important that he became the maximum representative of this musical trend.

Together with Vinicius de Moraes, he collaborates in several works, the result of which one of his greatest successes emerged, and for which he is especially remembered: «Garota de Ipanema». This theme is one of the icons of Brazil, the one that best stages the beauty of the beach of Ipanema and the beauty of women who walk. In the sixties, Jobim travels to the United States, where Bossa Nova has enormous acceptance.

Antonio Carlos Jobim is one of those musicians who knows no boundaries. A guitarist of extraordinary virtuosity, he knew how to adapt to the times when jazz knocked on the doors of Bossa Nova and, together with Joao Gilberto, he is one of the most representative figures of this mix. His recordings with Stan Getz or even with more orthodox musicians in the world of jazz are famous.

On December 8, 1994, he died at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York due to a heart attack after an operation.
