Music critics consider that this release encouraged glam metal to enter into the mainstream and become enshrined in the sales charts. In 1988, they published New Jersey, with which they had a similar impact. During those years they managed to place four singles at the top of the Hot 100: ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’, ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ – designated the best song of the eighties by the VH1 network -, ‘Bad Medicine’ and ‘I’ll Be There for You.’

In the nineties they distanced themselves from the glam sound that had characterized them —a genre that declined due to the rise of alternative rock— and renewed both their music and their wardrobe. The release of Keep the Faith in 1992 marked a break with the Bon Jovi of the eighties, but despite receiving criticism for its change in style, it was well received commercially and managed to sell twelve million copies until 2002.
