Postino: The Postman (Italian: Il postino, lit. ”The Postman”; the title used for the original US release) is a 1994 comedy-drama film co-written by and starring Massimo Troisi and directed by English filmmaker Michael Radford. Based on the 1985 novel Ardiente paciencia (English translation: “Burning Patience”) by Antonio Skármeta, itself adapted from a 1983 film written and directed by Skármeta, the film tells a fictional story in which the real life Chilean poet Pablo Neruda forms a friendship with a simple Procida postman (Troisi) who learns to love poetry. The cast includes Troisi, Philippe Noiret, and Maria Grazia Cucinotta. The screenplay was adapted by Radford, Troisi, Anna Pavignano, Furio Scarpelli, and Giacomo Scarpelli.

Although in the book the story is set in a small fishing village of the Black Island, near the Chilean coasts, in June 1969; For the film it was decided to do so in 1952, a period in which Pablo Neruda really was exiled in Italy. After trying to shoot the film on the island of Panthelería (Sicily), it was chosen to do it in Procida and Salinas, in the vicinity of Naples. In this place Massimo Troisi was born and that is when we verified the maximum implication of the actor in the project that would change his life. The cinema, once again, is the reflection of the emotions of its creators.

The geographical and sentimental map of IL postino always takes place in parallel in the beautiful filming. Panthelería is where the poet Pablo Neruda arrives asking for political asylum. This is where friendship with Mario (Massimo Troisi) who is hired as a porter to send the correspondence to the famous poet. Pablo Neruda is played by the famous French actor Philippe Noiret, with until that moment a long list of international successes (who could forget his character from Alfredo in Cinema Paradiso de Tornatore?). And that mailman, a poor and simple man, son of an illiterate fisherman (like almost all the inhabitants of the island), is the already named Massimo Troisi, known in Italy as ‘the comedian of feelings.’

The Italian film revolves around the master/disciple relationship that somehow was already appreciated in the aforementioned Cinema Paradiso. In that mythical tape it was the film room that served as a cultural, social and informative reference of a small Italian town. This municipality opened its eyes to the world through cinematography. However, in Il postino the engine that moves the characters represented is poetry. The film is also an interesting metaphor that perfectly reflects the social reality of the Italian population of the time. A society punished by postwar and disconnected in a certain way from the cultural life of the big cities.

But love does not understand social or cultural borders. Nor does sexual desire. And that’s when Beatricce enters. This is interpreted by a beautiful Maria Grazia Cucinotta that represents the power of Italian women. In this part of the production, narrated in the form of a rural costumbrista story, it is when a social triangle between Neruda, the mailman and the young Breatricce is established. Mario, who is a shy man, finds courage and also the means to try to conquer the woman who loves through the verses of his friend the poet.

The scenery of the tape is evocative. Mediterranean purity is always present in the background when not in first. In the final part, the precious color is alternated with some black and white images. With this, the filmmaker is committed to the melodrama with which he finds an emotional counterpoint to the sweetness expressed in the first part of the story. We also appreciate a very special music composed of the famous Argentine pianist and composer Luis Bacalov who took the Oscar to the best original soundtrack.

Il postino is a beautiful, subtle and cadencious tape. It seems to us that it is much more than a movie. It is a hymn to poetry and the power of the word. These are able to raise the soul of any human being. Mario Ruoppolo, the mailman, feeds on the learning of the teacher and poet next to him. We speak, therefore, of the history of a friendship that is born of a deep admiration and that at the end of the film is reciprocal. With this, humility is valued as the main moral vector of the sweet proposal presented.
