Glenn Miller, (Clarinda, Iowa; March 1, 1904; December 15, 1944), spent his childhood in Nebraska and Oklahoma until his family definitely settled in Colorado, where with twelve years he begins to study the trombone and play it in the band of his school. In 1926, being still a university student, he becomes a professional trombonist and joins the band of the famous drummer, Ben Pollack, on a tour of California. In that band, the clarinetist was the latter proclaimed “King of Swing”, Benny Goodman.

In 1928, the orchestra arrives in New York and Miller decides to leave it to play on their own in clubs, radio programs and musical shows, until well into 1932. In 1935, Ray Noble, British orchestra director, commits him to organize a swing band. For two years alternating the direction of the orchestra and performances in small stores, until in 1938 he decides to form his own big-band after several frustrated attempts. His first great success was “Moonlight Serenade” and a contract in the casino of Glen Island in New Rochelle, in New York, opens the doors to a triumphal race that will remain until the end of his career.

At the same time that the orchestra triumphs in dances, the band acquires tremendous popularity in the United States due to the issuance of their performances by a radio program that is heard from coast to coast in the United States, and is sponsored by the cigarette brand, Chesterfield.
The orchestra, already with a novel sound – the famous Miller sound – is already complete with its great instrumentalists and the contract that signs with the RCA – where over three and a half years it will record more than two hundred fifty themes – confirm it as one of the great swing bands of the time.
In July 1942, the recordings for RCA end due to the recordings strike decreed by the American Federation of Musicians and necessarily imposed on all its associates. This strike lasted two long years, and its end coincided with the beginning of World War II. Although he was not obliged for his age, he decides to enlist and the American army gives him the first and commander’s graduation later. In the army, Miller brings together excellent musicians also recruited and manages to form one of the greatest and best military orchestras in history.
Considered as a national hero for the fervent patriotic attitude of the Americans, the “Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band” is sent to England to encourage US troops in combat. On December 15, 1944, its plane does not reach Paris and the remains of it were never found. There, the legend began.
Since his body was not recoverable, Miller was allowed to have a memorial headstone placed at the US Army-operated Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
