Piano Day is an annual worldwide event that takes place on the 88th day of the year, which in 2025 is March 29. Every year, it provokes special concerts, onstage and online, as well as radio shows, podcasts, and playlists. Established in 2015, it is now well known across the globe and this year we celebrated its 10th anniversary!

Piano Day was founded in 2015 by the German pianist, composer, and producer Nils Frahm to encourage creative responses to the piano through new music, art, and improvisation, bringing people together through large and small, private and public piano-themed events. Frahm envisioned a worldwide holiday, “more important than Christmas and more stressful than Thanksgiving”, when people would create their own piano events with friends or simply share their piano-inspired videos, poems, or photos.

In the years after its launch, Piano Day quickly expanded and began to enter some of the world’s most prestigious venues, from Sydney Opera House to Funkhaus Berlin and London’s Barbican Centre. Every year has its Piano Day playlist, with specially composed piano pieces by professionals and amateurs of all ages and musical persuasions.

Since 2022, these playlists have been released as an official album, Vol. 4 coming out on 29 March this year. For the tenth anniversary, Frahm’s recording label Leiter has produced a Piano Day sheet music book together with Faber Music – Piano Day: The Collection. The book features pieces that have appeared on Piano Day playlists over the years, by artists like Olafur Arnalds, Chilly Gonzales, Joep Beving, and Hania Rani.

ARTE Concert’s Piano Day – 2025 edition

Pour son édition 2025, le Piano Day d’ARTE Concert reçoit Yann Tiersen, Büşra Kayıkçı et deux duos inédits : Christian Löffler et Meredi ainsi que Marguerite Thiam et Édouard Ferlet.

Dix ans que le Piano Day, créé par Nils Frahm en 2015, se déroule le 88e jour du calendrier, en écho au nombre de touches de l’instrument. Partenaire depuis plusieurs années de cet événement qui met le piano dans tous ses états, ARTE Concert célèbre cette édition anniversaire dans le décor chaleureux du LAB, à Nantes.

Dans ce cadre à l’élégance industrielle, Yann Tiersen nous présente seul au piano de nouveaux morceaux, la compositrice turque Büsra Kayikçi nous envoûte de ses notes néoclassiques, l’Allemand Christian Löffler et la Germano-arménienne Meredi associent electronica et mélopées métissées. La chanteuse française Marguerite Thiam déploie son flow introspectif accompagnée par le pianiste de jazz Édouard Ferlet.

Ces quatre performances prouvent une nouvelle fois encore toute la richesse du piano, et son incroyable porosité à toutes les sensibilités artistiques.

For its 2025 edition, ARTE Concert’s Piano Day welcomes Yann Tiersen, Büşra Kayıkçı and two new duos: Christian Löffler and Meredi as well as Marguerite Thiam and Édouard Ferlet.

Ten years since Piano Day, created by Nils Frahm in 2015, takes place on the 88th day of the calendar, echoing the number of keys of the instrument. A partner for several years of this event that puts the piano in all its forms, ARTE Concert is celebrating this anniversary edition in the warm setting of the LAB in Nantes.

In this setting of industrial elegance, Yann Tiersen presents us alone at the piano new pieces, the Turkish composer Büsra Kayikçi bewitches us with her neoclassical notes, the German Christian Löffler and the German-Armenian Meredi combine electronica and mixed chants. French singer Marguerite Thiam deploys her introspective flow accompanied by jazz pianist Édouard Ferlet.

These four performances prove once again the richness of the piano, and its incredible porosity to all artistic sensibilities.

Pour le Piano Day d’ARTE Concert, Yann Tiersen se dévoile en piano solo, face à son clavier. Une performance saisissante qui lève le voile sur l’album Rathlin from a Distance / The Liquid Hour.

Inutile de présenter Yann Tiersen, musicien et compositeur breton au rayonnement international. Ce multi-instrumentiste virtuose puise son inspiration dans la musique traditionnelle bretonne. Il ne limite cependant pas sa créativité puisque plusieurs de ses albums sont de magnifiques manifestes électroniques, touchant parfois au krautrock. Explorateur insatiable, il s’est aussi illustré dans la composition de bandes originales, devenues aussi mythiques que les films qu’elles accompagnent.

Le chemin d’ARTE Concert a souvent croisé celui de Yann Tiersen : sur l’Ile d’Ouessant pour une Release Party mémorable, dans l’aéroport de Templehof pour un magnifique Passengers en noir et blanc… Nous sommes donc ravis de nous laisser surprendre une nouvelle fois par ce génie breton.

Pour le Piano Day d’ARTE Concert, Yann Tiersen dévoile quelques mélopées issues de Rathlin from a Distance / The Liquid Hour. Oscillant entre piano classique et explorations électroniques, cet album est ici dévoilé dans une version entièrement acoustique, à quelques jours de sa sortie. Sublime !

For ARTE Concert’s Piano Day, Yann Tiersen reveals himself as a solo piano, in front of his keyboard. A striking performance that lifts the veil on the album Rathlin from a Distance / The Liquid Hour.

There is no need to introduce Yann Tiersen, a Breton musician and composer with an international reputation. This virtuoso multi-instrumentalist draws his inspiration from traditional Breton music. However, he does not limit his creativity since several of his albums are magnificent electronic manifestos, sometimes touching on krautrock. An insatiable explorer, he has also distinguished himself in the composition of soundtracks, which have become as mythical as the films they accompany.

ARTE Concert’s path has often crossed that of Yann Tiersen: on the island of Ouessant for a memorable Release Party, in Templehof airport for a magnificent black and white Passengers… We are therefore delighted to be surprised once again by this Breton genius.

For ARTE Concert’s Piano Day, Yann Tiersen unveils a few chants from Rathlin from a Distance / The Liquid Hour. Oscillating between classical piano and electronic explorations, this album is unveiled here in an entirely acoustic version, a few days before its release. Sublime!
