About Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA – July 6, 1971, Corona, New York, USA) was born into a very poor family in one of the city’s slums. With no musical background in his family, his interest in this art form was sparked by hearing the famous Creole bands that regularly paraded through the city’s avenues in his hometown. His first contact with music took place at a reformatory for abandoned children, when he was admitted to the reformatory band for good behavior. There, advised by the band’s musical director, Peter Davis, he chose the trumpet among other instruments.

Upon his release from the reformatory in 1914, he began working in Storyville’s nightclubs, where all the city’s nightclubs were concentrated, and there he met cornet player King Oliver. In 1918, with a well-earned reputation as a cornet player, he was hired by bandleader Kid Ory. Shortly thereafter, Fate Marable appointed him to join her prestigious band, which performed daily on the steamboats sailing the Mississippi.

In 1922, his big break came: King Oliver called him to join his Creole Jazz Band in Chicago. There, his epic career began. He recorded his first albums, and his fame reached Fletcher Henderson himself, the best Black bandleader of the time, who offered him a contract to join his band. In just one year, he revolutionized the style and playing of his bandmates and recorded with the best blues singers of the time, including the great Bessie Smith. He left Fletcher’s band and, between 1925 and 1928, began one of the most momentous chapters in the history of jazz. He formed his own two groups, first the Hot Five and then the Hot Seven, and the recordings of those years constitute the seed of all the jazz we know today.

Louis Armstrong spent seventeen years leading major bands. Louis Armstrong traveled to Europe for the first time in 1932 and returned in 1934, achieving spectacular success in Paris. Hollywood called upon him, and he appeared in numerous films of varying quality.

In the mid-1940s, he created his famous group, the “All Stars,” with trombonist Jack Teagarden, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Earl Hines, drummer “Big Sid” Catlett, and double bassist Arvell Shaw. With them, Louis Armstrong performed at Billy Berg’s in Los Angeles on August 13, 1947, and this new phase would last until the end of his life.

Louis Armstrong recorded countless albums, gave magnificent concerts, his musicians kept improving without the band’s quality fading, and the entire world listened to Louis Armstrong carry his everlasting smile across five continents. Until, two days after celebrating his 71st birthday, his heart stopped working. He died at his home in Corona, New York, on July 6, 1971.
