Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Last Night

The second of two concerts at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, which would sadly end in tragedy. Support at both performances was Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble and The Robert Cray Band featuring The Memphis Horns. On the 26th, the concert ended with a 20-minute encore jam of “Sweet Home Chicago” featuring Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. Shortly before 1AM on 27 August, a helicopter carrying Vaughan and members of Clapton’s crew crashed within seconds after takeoff, killing all instantly. It was en route to Chicago.

On the night of August 27, 1990, Stevie Ray Vaughan performed like few others in his life. In a memorable concert held at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in Wisconsin, he shared the stage with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and his older brother, Jimmie Vaughan. The finale was a sensation, with the five guitarists merging into a rendition of a Robert Johnson classic: “Sweet Home Chicago.”

Shortly after midnight, the musicians left the auditorium, ready to return to their home base, Chicago, a two-hour drive away. Stevie had planned to drive back with his brother, but he felt so exhausted that he chose to take one of the four helicopters waiting on a nearby runway to transport equipment and crew .

The aircraft took off, with Vaughan and three others on board. They would never reach Chicago. As it took off, the helicopter hit a hillock and its blades became entangled in power lines, causing such a violent impact that the guitarist and his fellow pilots died instantly.

At the time, the musician was going through a great moment. His album ” In Step” had just received a Grammy. Another album, with his brother Jimmie, remained unfinished, although months later it was completed and released with Stevie’s own title: ” Family Style .”

Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 3, 1954. At eight years old, he was already a promising guitarist. Along with his brother, three years older, he began playing in 1971 on the Austin blues club circuit. He had dropped out of school and decided to dedicate himself to music full-time. Soon after, he split from Jimmie (who founded the Fabulous Thunderbirds) and formed his own groups until he formed his final band, Double Trouble, in 1978.

The young guitarist quickly became a sensation, thanks to his powerful performance, his powerful and ragged voice, and his characteristic Texan hat.

Vaughan knew how to create his own style. He combined his greatest influences—Albert King, Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Kenny Burrell, Lonnie Mack, and his greatest idol, Jimi Hendrix (he often claimed he didn’t want to play like Hendrix, but rather wanted to be Hendrix)—and blended them with his own wild temperament.

In 1982, he was invited by David Bowie to participate as lead guitarist on his album Let ‘s Dance (his solo in the final section of the title track is memorable). His first albums then appeared: Texas Flood (1983), Couldn’t Stand the Weather (1984), and Soul to Soul (1985).

Everything seemed to be going well for him. However, a serious problem kept him on the brink of personal ruin: his addiction to alcohol and drugs. In 1987, he had to be admitted to a rehabilitation clinic. He wouldn’t return to the stage until a year later.

Still, his situation was improving. By 1989, he had left his addictions behind (he didn’t even drink coffee anymore) and had big plans. He never imagined that twelve months later, a helicopter would cross his path.
