Paul Simon
The musician and composer born in Newark (New Jersey) Paul Simon turns 84 today. One of the great pop composers of the twentieth century, Paul is known, above all, for having been – and still is, since they meet from time to time – part of the great duo he forms with his friend Art Garfunkel. In 1970, at the peak of their career and after having had hits with ‘The Sounds of silence’, ‘Mrs Robinson’ and ‘Bridge over troubled water’, they broke up and both continued on their own. Paul Simon has won 12 Grammy Awards and since 1992 he has been married to singer Eddie Brickell, with whom he has three children.
His parents were Hungarian Jews who fled Europe in the 1930s. Belle’s mother was a teacher and had enough notions of music to give private lessons in her spare time. His father had been first violinist of the main orchestra in Budapest and in New York he managed to play double bass in several bands and was even the leader of some with which he came to perform in TV shows such as those of Jackie Gleason and Arthur Godfrey. After Paul was born, named after his grandfather, a tailor from Vienna whom he never met, the family moved to the Queens neighborhood, where Simon spent his childhood.
In 1953, Paul met Art Garfunkel at school, when they were both taking part in a stage performance of “Alice in Wonderland”. By the age of thirteen, they were already singing together and practicing vocal harmonies in the style of the Everly Brothers. At the same time, Paul began to take an interest in the folk and blues of legends such as Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly, as well as jazz. In October 1954 he received his first guitar as a birthday present and began writing songs. One day, while he was in his room playing it, his father came in and said, “That”s all right, Paul. You have a beautiful voice.” For Paul, who idolized his father, these words were enough to make him decide to become a musician.
Three years later, the two teenagers, under the name Tom and Jerry (suggested by the label), recorded their first single with the Big Records label, “Hey schoolgirl” (1957), which reached number 49 on the charts. Later they both graduated from university, Paul in English Literature and Garfunkel in Mathematics. Although Paul began studying law, his true passion was rock and roll.
Between 1957 and 1964 Simon wrote and recorded over thirty songs, occasionally reuniting with Art Garfunkel – again as Tom and Jerry – for some singles such as “Our Song” and “That”s My Story”. However, the vast majority are recorded solo or with other musicians, all of them released on small labels such as Amy, Big, Hunt, Tribute and Madison, under various pseudonyms such as Jerry Landis, Paul Kane (from the film Citizen Kane) and True Taylor. He also had some success as part of a group called Tico and the Triumphs with a song called “Motorcycle”, which entered the charts in 1962. That same year, Paul recorded as Jerry Landis another song that briefly passed through the charts, “The Lone Teen Ranger”.
