LP 1969: ‘LED ZEPPELIN II’ (Led Zeppelin)
On October 22, 1969, the second album of the British band Led Zeppelin was released, whose songs were written and recorded in the few spare moments they had left of the tour that followed their debut album released only nine months earlier. To do this, they used more than a dozen studios in London, New York, Los Angeles, Memphis and Vancouver.
The production was handled by Jimmy Page assisted by recording engineer Eddie Kramer whose work with Jimi Hendrix impressed the members of Led Zeppelin. Some of the pieces on the album came from his spectacular live shows such as “Whole lotta love” or “Dazed and confused” which contained long spaces for his extensive improvisations. They borrowed several riffs and phrases from several of their most admired bluesmen such as “The lemon song” inspired by “The killing floor” by Howlin” Wolf or “Whole lotta love”, based on a song by Willie Dixon.
20 years after the release, the band, after being sued by the blues musician, reached an agreement and since then they have shared authorship with Dixon. But the album contained much more than a few borrowed riffs. Their instrumental and sonic power paved the way for practically all the bands that emerged later and “Led Zeppelin II” would reach for many the category of quintessence of heavy metal. In addition to Page”s creative and wild riffs was Bonham”s drumming, especially noticeable and evident in “Moby Dick”. The album reached No. 1 on the US charts in its eighth week on the charts, unseating none other than the Beatles” “Abbey Road”, which, adding the fact that Led Zeppelin”s album was the first No. 1 of the new decade of the seventies, was a symbol that the golden sixties were behind us.
